What Does The U.S. Writers' Strike Mean For Canadian TV?

A lot and a little, depending on the scenario. Any U.S. shows made here will not have any new scripts - and there are dozens in production in places like Toronto and Vancouver. So that may cut down on work for a lot of local crews, who are collateral damage in the dispute.

Canadian shows that are specifically made for networks in this country - i.e. Hudson & Rex or Murdoch Mysteries - will continue as normal.

But depending on how long this goes, almost every show (besides those endless reality programs) will grind to a halt for the duration. And no one knows how long that might be. But it won't be good for anyone.

"Right now, if a show is in production past the script stage and not in need of rewrites, production should continue apace. But if the strike goes on a decent amount of time, any film or series that requires WGA members is going to be in trouble, no matter whether it is shot in the U.S. or Canada. And given that Canada has become an extremely busy hub for what are called foreign “service” productions – projects whose creative origins and players are international but rely on Canadian crews and tradespeople – the financial impact could be felt hard within our borders."

Didn't know that the new head of CW is a transplanted Canadian.  From the article Brad Schwartz mentions that he
is interested in working with Canadians to help build the new CW schedule.  He mentions that they are
interested in acquiring product from here and working as co-producers for newer shows.
