The Show Won't Go On: Writers Strike For First Time In 15 Years

Say goodbye to late night talk shows first and anything else that requires a script - The Writers Guild of America has walked off the job over pay and streaming issues. The union deadline of midnight Tuesday came and went without a resolution and last minute talks failed. Which means most of Hollywood is effectively shut down.

A prolonged walkout will mean the post primetime talk shows and others like Saturday Night Live will go into reruns for the foreseeable future and if the strike lasts a long time, new shows for next season will be in jeopardy.

OK, but what I want to know - are they allowed to write their own picket signs or would that be considered strike breaking?

The hosts of the late-night shows are all backing the writers, but you won't see them for a while.

All the major late-night talk shows will stop airing immediately as Writers Guild of America officially goes on strike

Re: The Show Won't Go On: Writers Strike For First Time In 15 Years

There could be one unexpected advantage to this walkout if it continues long enough to delay the fall season in September. Networks that run their own streaming services and make exclusive programs for them, could wind up showing some of them on regular over-the-air TV, giving non-subscribers a peek at shows they otherwise would never get to see.

This already happened once during the COVID production shutdown. CBS aired a few episodes of both its first Star Trek remake and episodes of The Good Fight from what was then called CBS All-Access to fill in the gaps in regular programming. A prolonged strike might mean it could conceivably happen again if they get desperate enough to avoid months and months of reruns.

Especially if some of these series have been on the streaming services for a while and have already been watched by many of their subs., so they'd have a lot less to lose by effectively giving away for free, while also promoting their services for those who aren't yet signed up.

Turns out there may not be as many reality shows filling the gap while the writers are out as there were last time they walked.

Sounds like a lot of either foreign shows and reruns will be filling the gap if this thing runs as long as some fear.

Even game shows like Jeopardy! may be affected.
