This 2023 Event Is Now The Most Watched TV Show In U.S. History

Why is there a new thread about a months-old Super Bowl contest? It turns out Neilsen, the ratings service that measures these things, has revised its numbers and has now declared February's contest between the Chiefs and Eagles not only the most watched Super Bowl in history, but the single biggest viewed event ever in the history of broadcasting in the United States.

According to the company, there were “irregularities in the encoding that enables Nielsen’s measurement of TV viewing as well as in the measurement of out-of-home viewing” that led to the new ranking.

It means the game actually drew
115.1 million viewers on various available platforms. The football final is always a big deal. But if these numbers are correct, despite all the options available, including a host of streaming services and platforms like YouTube, it's astounding one broadcast could ever attract that many eyeballs at once.

Most thought the days when everyone gathered at the same time to watch a single show were over. This proves it can still happen. Pretty amazing.

Revised ratings make Super Bowl LVII most-watched network broadcast ever

Two important caveats:

1. This figure includes streaming. The traditional broadcast network viewers were almost certainly lower than previous high performing broadcasts.

2. This includes out of home viewing (bars, restaurants, etc) whereas Super Bowl ratings prior to 2021 do not. The 2015 and 2018 Super Bowls would surpass 2022 if their out of home viewership was included.
