Not that I want to be attacked by paterson1, but a reviewer who looked at the shows on CBC's Gem website has concluded that there are few Canadian Gem's there - unless you look at shows from abroad.
"The bulk of CBC Gem is made up of CBC programs that, judging from their sometimes anemic viewing numbers, most people didn’t watch over the air."
But that doesn't mean there's nothing good to see there. The author, Maurice Tougas, recommends a number of shows that can be accessed free - and all of them come from either the U.S. or Britain.
It could be that familiarity breeds contempt, but the shows he highlights aren't often available anywhere else. And some of them truly are worth a look, especially if you're searching for something different. You can check out his recommendations here.

I always wonder how CBC GEM is doing. I don't watch streamers other than Crave and even then not a huge amount. GEM has certainly expanded what they are offering and a much better variety. So this indicates they may be doing alright. The writer of the article actually did comment and recommend some of GEM's original programming like Hey Lady!, My 90 Year Old Roomate, Decoys and Summit '72.
Not really surprising that in his opinion GEMS best programming would be the material you can't get elsewhere. Most of this would be from the UK. Looks like they have also greatly increased their movie and documentary offerings, lots of imports and Canadian films.
Anyone I know that has watched GEM says that it is better to spend some money and go commercial free at $4.99 per month. Not sure why the writer would say that GEM is the only place to get cancon. Crave, Stack, Netflix, even Pluto has cancon.
