2016 Strikes Again, Taking Another Veteran DJ

This one was 93, so it may not have come as big a surprise as some of the others. And you may not remember the name Jim Lowe. But he had an amazing 50-year career in the top media market in the world, New York City, working on stations like WCBS-FM, WNBC and the legendary WNEW.

If you never heard Lowe on air, you might be familiar with him for another reason. He's one of the few DJs I can recall that's ever reached #1 on Billboard. He did it with his classic 1956 hit "Green Door." Wonder if he ever played it on his show?

Another sad addition to SOWNY founder Dale Patterson's "Rock & Roll Heaven" page.

Jim Lowe, Radio D.J. and Singer, Dies at 93

Oh! That's what the original Green Door song sounds like!
I only knew this song through the Mini Pops. They sang it on an 80's album of theirs, which covered a bunch of "classics".
(although I may have also heard the original a few times on AM 740...)

I always thought it was the theme song for the porn movie.  Who knew

The cover versions I am familiar with of Green Door are the one by psychobilly kings the Cramps from their Psychedelic Jungle LP. The same LP also contains their cover of The Green Fuz. There was also the cover of Green Door by Shakin Stevens which I remember from Much Music and possibly CFNY.

Re: 2016 Strikes Again, Taking Another Veteran DJ

Do we have to explain the demographic bump going on?

There's nothing about 2016  that's awful or deadly. Expect this kind of thing more often as that generation hits peak death rate in a few years, and then it will level back to a more normal rate. There's a lot of them, and they're only at the beginning.of their exits.

Sorry to be the grim reaper, but professional knowledge and all that.

The BBC has taken on this question and concluded that, despite what it seems, 2016 was no worse for celeb deaths than any other year.

Have more famous people died in 2016?
