TV Guide's Newest Edition: All Streaming Listings

Anyone who's read my posts over the years knows I was a big fan of the old TV Guide, back when it actually had some use and some decent content. The Guide exists to this day, but only in the U.S. and its listings are a shadow of its former self. But now the people who still publish what was once the biggest selling magazine in North America are back with a new idea: TV Insider.

But instead of network shows and when they're on, this monthly edition will focus almost entirely on streaming channels, like Netflix, Disney+, Paramount+ and others. I have no idea what this thing will look like. The old Guide provided time of day and channels for each show, which clearly isn't needed for an entity that has no traditional "time slots." The shows are there when they're there and you can watch them when it's good for you.

I suspect it will be more about informing viewers regarding the existence of shows they may not know about and features on the stars and the industry. But does anyone still buy magazines anymore?

The new booklet won't have Crave or any Canadian content in it, although somewhat ironically, the cover of the first edition will - Kiefer Sutherland, who has a new show on Paramount+.

I just thought it was worth noting that this staple of old TV is trying to make a comeback in today's very changed television climate. It will be interesting to see if it works. According to editorial director Michael Fell, "We’re hoping to deliver a brand-new product to the world focused on streaming. It’s not your old TV Guide.”

As someone who fondly remembers the days of the old version coming into my mailbox every week, I wish them luck. They may need it.

Re: TV Guide's Newest Edition: All Streaming Listings

I use the US TV Guide app.  It lets you enter your favorite shows and it gives you an alert anytime they're going to come on.  I picked New York City as my guide location because the New York City stations clear the entire network schedule so the listings will work for prime time in any major city in the eastern time zone as long as you don't care about the channel number matching.

TV Guide U.S. does not sell to Canadians, so even if you wanted to pay extra for the postage and in American funds, they simply refuse to send it this way.

I do still have a sort of subscription, though, because I find some of their previews useful. It's from a site called Magzter, which allows you to purchase separate online subscriptions to hundreds of different magazines and you can read them over the web.

A good service, not too expensive at all, a huge variety of titles and the only way to get some of these publications in Canada.
