Monday Is World Radio Day

This happens every year, but it seems to be a bigger deal overseas than here. In fact, on this side of the pond, outside of a few public or community radio stations, I rarely hear it mentioned. This year's official theme is "Radio And Peace," which - while a lofty goal - may be taken to a bit of an extreme by the U.N, which declared the day in 2012.

Check out this verbiage:

"It [radio] offers an alternative methodology of conflict prevention by clarifying frustrations or clashes of interest, clearing misunderstandings, identifying issues of distrust … This can help counter hate, the desire for revenge or the will to take up arms."

Hmmm. Have they heard U.S. talk radio?

They say radio can help prevent war. I think that may be giving the medium way too much credit! (Although some of us have been involved in radio wars. But I'm pretty sure that's an entirely different thing!)

Anyway, Happy Radio Day to all who gather at SOWNY.  I'm not sure a cake is the right thing to bring. How about some new batteries?

For me, every day is Radio Day. But happy Radio Day everyone.

Re: Monday Is World Radio Day

I actually heard a PSA for World Radio Day on both 1010 and 640 Monday, which is surprising.

This campaign is huge overseas, especially in India and on the African continent, but barely anyone pays it any heed here. Until, it seems, this year.
