TV's Hottest Show To Sidestep Super Bowl By Airing 2 Days Early

Critics and viewers have been buzzing for several weeks about a show called "The Last of Us," a drama based on a video game that has been airing to great acclaim on HBO. It usually airs its latest episodes on Sunday nights, but not this week - not even this juggernaut wants to face the Goliath that is the Super Bowl.

So the network has decided to move the latest episode to Friday, to avoid any conflict with the game. It's an anomaly that doesn't happen very often - one of TV's hottest shows being moved to avoid forcing viewers to choose between one big event and another.

The odd thing about this, of course, is that HBO constantly reruns shows like this over the course of a week, so even if was to air on Sunday, viewers could always see it on another day or time.

‘The Last of Us’ to drop early episode to dodge the Super Bowl

The network has clarified this story and it changes things a fair bit. The earlier showing is actually only on HBO Max - not on cable's HBO, which will still air the new "Last of Us" on Sunday night in its regular timeslot. It's an odd move to me - competing against the Super Bowl is a very tough assignment. Hopefully fans of this show either have a DVR or can catch it later in the week, when it's rerun.

I see the promos for this show on CTV and Crave all the time.  Haven't watched it yet.  Last of Us only premiered on January 15th.  This is the most expensive TV series filmed in Canada.  The show is shot in Alberta and has a budget of up to $15 million US per episode.

It has become the new buzz-worthy show of the moment. A huge attraction for HBO, which used to be famous for shows ahead of the curve, like The Sopranos. It's been a while since they've had a commodity this hot and I expect they'll ride it for everything it's worth.

Makes sense. HBO were the first to figure out Sunday nights were the ideal release time for watercooler-talk generating shows. Releasing it Friday gives everyone also interested in the Superbowl some time over the weekend to watch it.

The airing on HBO itself is almost immaterial at this point.

Speaking of HBO and HBO Max & Crave.  Does anyone know when the new season of Succession can be seen in the Toronto Market.  Would like to continue watching.  If it's HBO Max I guess we're out of luck.

HBO series " Warrior " is really good if you like historical action stuff.
