Composer Burt Bacharach Leaves An Amazing Songbook After Death At 94

He was a voice you rarely heard, but a name that was literally instrumental in modern music. Burt Bacharach was the co-composer behind a slew of mid-60s and 70s tunes that read like a greatest hits package. Among the songs he wrote, mostly with partner Hal David:

-The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance by Gene Pitney
-Close To You, The Carpenters,
-Do You Know The Way To San Jose, Dionne Warwick,
-What The World Needs Now, Jackie DeShannon
-Walk On By, Dionne Warwick
and
-Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head from B.J. Thomas

Even the Beatles were unable to escape his prolific songwriting ability, covering his "Baby It's You" in the early days when they were still recording songs composed by others.

And that's just to name a few. How prolific was he? According to Reuters: Bacharach and David had 30 Top-40 hits in the '60s alone." Pretty amazing legacy.

Composer Burt Bacharach dies at age 94

He also co-wrote "Always Something There to Remind Me" with Hal David, which was recorded by a number of artists but is probably best known by its early 80s version recorded by Naked Eyes.

Bacharach and David also composed/wrote the score for the Broadway production of "Promises Promises"...
(Jerry Orbach starred in the original Broadway production)

Growing up, my parents had numerous Bacharach albums and 8 tracks....  loved listening to these...  sudden key changes were a Bacharach signature.

What a great list of songs.  Burt Bacharach and partner Hal David represented some of the best in pop/MOR and Adult Contemporary music.  His compositions were never rock, but the music and hit records also weren't schmaltzy or "old people's music".  Bacharach/David songs sounded current, contemporary and fit well with both MOR stations and even top 40 outlets.  His compositions still sound fresh and have certainly held up very well over the years.

I was just about to post this song on this thread and then I saw your post.

Here is a rock interpretation of a BB/HD song. My Little Red Book by LA psychedelic  band Love ( best known for their landmark Forever Changes album). Have always liked this version since I first heard it. This was a minor hit and this version is from Dick Clark's Where the Action Is. Manfred Mann I believe had a hit with this song in the UK before this version.

'Walk On By', by the Stranglers, was not only the best cover ever, it was the best Punk song ever.

Let's not forget about his lyricist, Hal David, who co-wrote many of these hits with Bachrarach. One of the greatest song-writing teams ever.
