Richard Crouse was sitting in for Jim Richards on Newstalk 1010's evening show tonight and I enjoyed his conversation with the creator of this documentary about the cool Canadian music outfit Doug and the Slugs. It sounds terrific so thought I'd share this article, and the doc airs on January 15th.
I've been tuning in to 1010 more and more during the evening, Richard Crouse or Jim Richards, Newstalk's good company while doing the dishes and other boring get-ready-for-tomorrow things.

My dad grew up listening to Doug and the Slugs. Best songs by them were "Making It Work" and "Day By Day".

Doug & The Slugs received major American exposure when "Too Bad" was used as the theme song to comedian Norm Macdonald's ABC show in 1999. Good tune, although the intro to the sitcom seems incredibly long by today's standards - more than a full minute! The show was pretty good but unfortunately didn't last long.

I have always enjoyed Richard Crouse on TV and glad he is getting more radio exposure. He comes across as a real movie fan, doesn't get overly critical. Best of all he isn't one of those critics that only likes one or two types of movies, or is always featuring an obscure C movie that most will never watch. He does talk about these too but has a good balance with more popular features. Mainstream mass appeal flicks that some other critics tend to ignore or blow off, Richard usually enjoys as much as the audience.
Doug and the Slugs sort of surprises me. Personally, I never really liked the group. I hear them on the radio too much with their couple of cancon hits. But a few years ago I heard a quick live radio poll with Evan Solomon asking listeners what songs or groups helped you get through the COVID pandemic, or lifted your spirits. To my surprise a few people mentioned Doug and the Slugs and Makin It Work. Since they were based out west and likely more popular there, maybe these callers were from Western Canada.

I too have been tuning in to 1010 during the evening and find Jim Richards highly entertaining and Richard Crouse did an amazing job filling in over the holidays. I especially liked the evening this past week where he played music by Bowie on all the breaks, as Crouse is a major Bowie fan, like me!

If you're a fan of Richard Crouse, you might be interested to see his website.
His bio on the site contains this fascinating little tidbit:
"His first job, at 16, was a nighttime DJ at CKBW radio in his native Nova Scotia, the youngest DJ in the Maritimes. “My position was ‘jr. announcer’, a job that actor Donald Sutherland had held at the same radio station many years before.”
Leave it to Crouse to follow in a Canadian actor's footsteps!

The Toronto Star has a long and very complimentary review of the documentary and the woman who made it - along with how her life intersected with the band.
