CMT

I'm not much for watching TV. My wife is the TV watcher in our house.

Lately she's been watching this channel called CMT. The channel only has one program. It's back to back, round the clock replays of the old Cheers program.

not shure what the CMT stands for. Must be something like Cheers Mega time.

I started out with nothing and I still have most of it.

Re: CMT

Looks like they're just marathoning Cheers between Christmas and New Year's - https://www.cmt.ca/schedule/ . Prior to Christmas it was interspersed with "Everybody Loves Raymond", "The Office", "Due South", etc.

Surprised you haven't heard of CMT, formerly Country Music Television which has obviously gone through format changes.    Wikipedia article: http://tinyurl.com/u37dejh8

The American CMT is no better, but at least it's a variety of back to backs... https://www.cmt.com/tv-schedule

Re: CMT

Just another example of a cable channel that started out as one thing and morphed into something entirely different, without changing its name or branding.

Country music is to Cheers as PBS is to Beavis & Butthead. But it doesn't seem to matter anymore.

Like I said, I watch very little TV. I sit down every night at 11:00 to watch the news, then I generally watch whatever my wife has on after that. Usually some kind of mindless game show.

Unlike CMT Canada,
CMT USA is still showing Country Music videos at select designated times.

CMT Canada really should rebrand into something new though. That would be smart.
An all 80's channel might be interesting...

I was going to express my amazement that you haven't heard of a channel that has been on basic cable in Canada for most of the last 35 years but then I remembered the time that you said you were only vaguely aware of the Oscars.

We don't have cable. It's satellite. Got it for my wife when I was working and away from home a lot. She gets over 100 channels and watches the same half dozen all the time.

I don't believe I ever expressed only a vague awareness of the Oscars. I'm too aware of it at the time of year it's on. That's all one hears about. I probably said I've never watched it, because I haven't ever watched it.

Re: CMT

Love CMT because they show Frasier and King of Queens for my sitcom fix.  Yes, from what I recall it used to stand for Country Music Television which has no relation to such a thing anymore.

Country music is a bigger deal in the US than here.  However looking at CMT USA's schedule almost all country videos are relegated to 4am-9am in the morning when very few people are watching.  They do a countdown show on Saturday 9am to 12noon.  Rest of the day and evening all scripted programming.  CMT Canada dropped their country countdown program a few years ago.

The American Country music/shows seem to have moved to Circle TV, but I have no idea how well (or poorly) they are actually doing in ratings: https://www.circleallaccess.com/schedule/

The music video is the lamest art form ever concieved. It's little wonder they failed. Even Cheers is more compelling TV

Ridiculous opinion.

And they failed? Failed how? Music videos completely changed the music industry.

Then why is CMT showing 40 year old reruns instead?

Re: CMT

Yeah; music video channels were massively successful, but the videos naturally moved to non-linear, and lately, byte-sized platforms.

And porn completely changed the Internet. That doesn't mean it has any kind of artistic merit.

Music videos moved to YouTube. They’re still a big thing, just not on traditional TV.

Bingo. Popular songs get hundreds of millions of views on YouTube.
Why did music television cease to exist? Because the people who loved them had no disposable income and the adults who watched did it during the commercials of their favourite shows, which is impossible to sell.

Pg. A13 of this morning's print edition Globenmail:    "I''ve never been a fan of video.    I think it really dumbed down the music industry.    Before videos you could close you eyes, listen to the music, and have your own images, from your imagination" -- BURTON CUMMINGS

Re: CMT

In Canada, CMT is owned by Corus.   Music videos are not a draw on TV anymore, as Music Music, MTV, etc are also examples of where they dropped videos.     Canadian specialty channels do this a lot on weaker rated stations by buying a few shows, and run it on all of their channels to death to fill the time.   Cheers, Frasier, Reba, Will and Grace etc. all was bought to run on Dejaview, W(lesser), and CMT it seems.    They also use these shows on their streaming services Stack and Pluto TV.    CMT will run some country music awards things, but really it's nothing more than a classic tv channel now.   I wouldn't doubt, they will soon hand in CMT or Dejaview's license as they don't seem to be investing much into either.   CMT I'm sure they are still paying for the rights to use the trademark from the USA.
As more drop cable, these channels no longer become cost effective to run.

No. You must be thinking of a different Mrs Turkeytop.
