Groucho Marx & Dick Cavett: Together Again On PBS

I'm a huge fan of the late Groucho Marx. In many ways, I consider him the funniest and most original comedian who ever lived. He was also close friends with Dick Cavett, who famously brought Groucho out of retirement to guest several times on his late-night talk show. Those appearances have become legendary over the years and now they're the basis of a new PBS American Masters special, coming to Channel 17 on Tuesday, Dec. 27th at 8 PM.

The special uses clips from those shows and interviews with an aging Cavett to explore the relationship between the two, which began when Groucho was a guest on the Tonight Show and Cavett was one of the writers.

I can't wait to see this 90-minute special, and if you have a VPN set to the U.S, you can watch a trailer here

Early in the new year, the same show will feature another pioneer - this one from the world of music. A special American Masters on Roberta Flack looks back at the impact she made on the charts and the nation, as a fighter not only for hits but racial equality. That one airs on Jan. 24th.

Speaking of musical specials, there's a Grammy Salute to the songs of Paul Simon airing Wednesday night. Simon will be feted with special performances ranging from Elton John, Garth Brooks, Dave Matthews and Stevie Wonder to Sting. And though the octogenarian singer-songwriter has long since retired, he performs one more time at the end of the special, which was taped at a well-reviewed concert last spring. It starts at 9 PM on CBS.

Re: Groucho Marx & Dick Cavett: Together Again On PBS

I just discovered this American Masters is followed by another show, a one hour documentary called "When Comedy Went To School." It's about a generation of legendary comedians who honed their skills in a place that would become equally legendary - the Catskills. It's hosted by Robert Klein and airs immediately following the American Masters episode, starting at 9:30 PM.

Here's the description from the Channel 17 website:

WHEN COMEDY WENT TO SCHOOL is an entertaining portrait that tells the story of the Catskill hotels and bungalow colonies that provided the setting for a remarkable group of young Jewish-American comedians who re-defined stand-up and sketch comedy and forever altered the course of American humor. Comic legends Jerry Lewis, Sid Caesar, Jackie Mason, Mort Sahl, Dick Gregory, Jerry Stiller and others offer their unique, heartfelt, and oftentimes hilarious anecdotes about what the Catskills meant to their careers.

As it turns out, "When Comedy Went To School" isn't new, and in fact, the entire special is available online right now at the PBS.org website. It's free to watch until March of 2024, and does not appear to need a VPN. Or, if this interests you, you can record the thing next Tuesday night.

Here's where you can see it right now.
