Will These Incredible BBC Holiday Specials Come To North America?

The BBC has slated a host of big musical specials during the holiday period this year that I would love to see. And I'll bet I'm not alone. I'm just not sure if any of the channels on this side of the pond will pick up the rights to them.

One is about is Tina Turner's first tour of London in the 60s, where she opened for the Rolling Stones.

But the one I'd really like to see concerns the very first time Motown artists, revered by many in Britain including the Beatles, went overseas to the U.K.

"On New Year’s Day, BBC Two tells the story of the very first UK tour undertaken by musicians on the label, including Stevie Wonder, The Supremes, Martha Reeves & The Vandellas and Smokey Robinson and The Miracles in 'When Motown Came To Britain.' "

And then there's a special on an uber-Motown writer/producer, responsible for some of the label's biggest hits. "Lamont Dozier at the BBC" is described as "a selection of BBC archive performances of the legendary Motown songwriter’s best loved and most recognizable hits. In addition, BBC Two will show Marvin Gaye: Live at Montreux, a film which captured Gaye’s performance at Montreux Jazz Festival in July 1980."

All three would be amazing to watch, but there's no word yet if - or when - they might air here.

With apologies to Lorne and his always great Oldies Music Board, I have to steal a recommendation made there. The Roku Channel is currently featuring a 1998 biopic on The Temptations, with terrific actors and of course, amazing music. It's free online if you have a VPN set to the U.S. and you can watch it anytime here.

Best bets here might be BBC First or CBC Gem.  Gem is currently showing a 4 part BBC documentary on My Life As A Rolling Stone.

I found the page on the BBC where the special will be streamed after its broadcast. But the Beeb usually has extreme precautions that can defeat a VPN set to the UK, like needing to enter your TV licence number before the video will start. For those wanting to try it, though, you can find it here after January 1st.
