Most Sports Play-By-Play Crews Back On The Road - Except In Canada

Among the broadcasters that are not where the games are being played include the crew for the Leafs, along with most other Canadian teams. Is it concerns over illness or just cheapness? Most of those who will talk for attribution believe it's the latter more than the former. And they're not happy about it.

"I'm somewhat embarrassed that we're not there," said longtime Maple Leafs radio broadcaster Joe Bowen... "In my humble estimation, it's not the right way to do it but the powers that be at present believe — I guess it's a cost-cutting measure of some sort — so this is what we're doing and we're trying to do the best we can under the circumstances."

Back to normal for most NHL/NBA radio broadcasters — but not everyone

Doesn't bother me.
Game calls are more than fine.
Why would this be an issue for you?

Doesn't actually bother me, because I don't follow those sports. But this board is about local radio and TV and this fits the category. And it seems to bother those tasked with broadcasting the games, who rightly point out (and frankly their candor surprised me) they can't do their jobs quite as well without being in the actual stadiums/arenas. I will take their word that it's an issue for them, and wonder how much longer their employers will continue this practice when other teams/countries have stopped it.

Trying to remember the movie where the guy calling the baseball game from a distance was also doing sound effects of the bat cracking into the baseball etc. It was quite humorous.

Yes, the article makes clear who's on the road again and who isn't.

"[Gary] Meagher, [the NHL's senior executive vice-president of communications] said Ottawa, Winnipeg, Edmonton and Montreal (French only) were the four Canadian teams that had radio crews on site at road games. He added "a few" U.S.-based teams were providing TV simulcasts on radio for road broadcasts."

Too bad he didn't have this record from the long ago days of early radio.

I don't know if there are other movies with similar scenes, but there was definitely one in Bull Durham.
