As Radio Cuts Back, A Digital Sports Empire Emerges

The all sports stations ain't what they used to be, and now many of those unceremoniously turfed from the TSN and Sportsnet radio stations across the country are finding new life - and new listeners - in the world of podcasting. Among those who have abandoned one medium for another - Bob McCown, Darren Dreger, John Shannon and many more.

At first, McCown resisted the idea. But it gradually grew on him and now his online show is a huge hit.

“I work one hour a day,” he said. “And the best part is, I can do it with my underwear on. I don’t have to go anywhere. I don’t have to pay for parking. If I want a cup of tea, I make a cup of tea in the kitchen, and then I walk to my office and do the show."

Was he doing his show at The FAN without underwear on?

Re: As Radio Cuts Back, A Digital Sports Empire Emerges

There was more than once when Sportsnet and the Fan were carrying a Blue Jays game and his show was only available as a podcast after the fact.

He complained until he was told that the podcast was one of the most listened to in Canada at the time.  He admitted to not knowing why anyone would listen to a show after it aired but said that if people wanted it and the "idiot program director" wanted to pay him to do a show that no one would hear while he was doing it, who was he to argue?  He also wondered allowed if he could swear since it wasn't technically being broadcast anywhere.
