Ex-CFTR Top 40 Sportscaster Jokes About His Radio Past At Comedy Show

The name Ted Bird is huge in Montreal radio, where he's been working for decades. But back in the early 80s, Ted was just getting started and landed a gig doing sports at then-Top 40 CFTR. He's long since moved on and has had an incredible career as a morning man in La Belle Province, but it's clear his sense of humour never left him.

It was in evidence during a comedy show he hosted in a place called Vankleek Hill, which is actually in Ontario.

According to a review of the show:

"The current host of Hudson’s Lite 106.7 FM’s morning show’s jokes about his radio career and the number of stations he has worked for brought laughs from an audience familiar with his broadcasting work.

"Naming his various shows and the many co-hosts he has had, the veteran radio host analyzed why he had worked in so many places with so many different people over the years.

“Obviously… I’M the problem,” Bird joked.

(Ironically, John Derringer might have been able to deliver the same line, only it wouldn't have been funny.)

But it's nice to see radio worked into a comedy routine. It's not a topic that comes up often in stand-up. Now if only Funny 820 had it on tape...

Laughs abound at Ted Bird and Friends Comedy Show

Ted always tried to have a great sense of humour at 'TR, but doing sports didn't exactly lend itself to hilarity. But there was a brief peek into what was to come in his Quebec radio career with a special Christmas piece he did for the nationally syndicated Sunday Sunday documentary show, which came out of the 680 studios.

"Dragnet Christmas" was part of a contest the show ran to encourage affiliates to contribute their own pieces, for a cash prize. Ted's won first place, although they also had to award another station's bit just to ensure there were no accusations of favouritism.

I asked him about this piece many years later and he called it "embarrassing." But I always thought it was pretty entertaining. You can judge for yourself here.
