A Closed Circuit Question For AM 640 Programmers

Since there's no other way to reach the station in this day of "we don't really want to talk to anyone" corporate culture, I will post a question here in the hopes that someone at 640 will actually see it.

Every Sunday morning, I take the dog for a walk around 8 AM. I wait for that time so I can listen to a show called "A Word In Edgewise," which - let's face it - is an hour long version of CFRB's Roundtable. I usually find it fairly interesting and look forward to it.

But for the past two weeks, it's been replaced by a reroll of an hour of Ben O'Hara-Byrne's "A Little More Conversation." Yet the station continually promotes "Edgewise" all week long, which means you're promoing a show you never air. That's pretty frustrating for a listener who deliberately goes out of his way to hear it - not something everyone would do.

Since the weekends are automated, is this just someone entering the wrong number into the cue? Where has this show gone? If it's no longer on the air, stop running the promos. And if it's still being produced, could you indicate when it airs? Either way, pretty careless and since I find "Conversation" incredibly dull, you're driving away would-be listeners from a show you heavily promote during the rest of the week.

Not to mention that your website indicates it's airing right now - when it's not. What gives 640?

Perhaps their Amanda Cupido could help with this and pass it along to the right person. Contact her through the form at https://www.amandacupido.com/ .

Re: A Closed Circuit Question For AM 640 Programmers

It's happened again for two weeks in a row - a show that's heavily promoted on AM 640 fails to appear in its designated time slot. Last week, "A Word In Edgewise," which is supposed to air at 8 AM Sunday morning, was replaced by a reroll of a Ben O'Hara-Byrne show from earlier in the week.

This Sunday was even stranger. The intro to "Edgewise" ran at around 8:06 AM, but before it finished, it was cut off and yep, back to another rerun of Ben.

I have no idea why this keeps happening - a glitch in the automated software or perhaps someone simply entering a wrong number in the computer. But they need to fix it before it heads into week 3 and the show is again kept off the air in the #1 market in Canada.

Uh...maybe because you are the only one listening?
No need to care about the proper care of a radio station if nobody is listening.

Re: A Closed Circuit Question For AM 640 Programmers

Well, I doubt I'm the only one. Even TSN1050 has listeners in the weirdest times of the day. (Though I'm not sure you can honestly say that about BNN 1150!)

Still, if they're going to promote it so heavily during the week, the very least they could do is air it at the advertised time. As far as I know, there's no reroll, so if you miss it on 640 (it does run elsewhere, including CHML) it's over. The time slot is perfect for me, because I walk the dog around that time of the morning and let's face it, there's not much else to listen to on local radio Sunday mornings.

And it's actually quite an interesting show most weeks - kind of a clone of CFRB's Roundtable, only using Corus radio personalities from across the country.

It's available streaming/on-demand here. That said, its last show audio posted was the July 30th edition, so perhaps it's on a bit of a summer break/hiatus with trying to coordinate vacation schedules for panelists? That, or ended.

Yes, it could be on hiatus or cancelled, but then why do they constantly promote it on other shows? There are a couple of other possible scenarios here:

-It's airing as normal but they're not updating the website for whatever reason or
-They're running a promo for a show they're no longer airing or
-As stated previously, there's a glitch in the automation software someplace. I say that because I actually heard the intro start at 8 AM Sunday morning with the theme music and female announcer, only to get cut off suddenly and replaced by the O'Hara-Byrne reroll 30-40 seconds later. Why would they run the intro, which is part of the pre-produced package, if they had no plans to air the entire show? None of it makes any sense.

I'd call the station but fear I'll never get "A Word In Edgewise!"

Also, their host hasn't tweeted since July 29th but he had been reasonably regularly. Perhaps on summer vacation and we'll see the show return after Labour Day?

Re: A Closed Circuit Question For AM 640 Programmers

Jon McComb is the host, but he's retired from CKNW, and only does this one show. So he's kind of like on a permanent vacation in any event! But yes, he could be away or even ailing. (I remember him from CFCF Montreal back in the late 70s, so he's been around a long time.)

I'll see if the show is there next week and let the board know.

Update: it wasn't. Another Ben O'Hara-Byrne reroll.

If this thing is cancelled or no longer being produced, then please stop running promos for it all week if you're never going to air it. It hasn't been on in, what, three weeks?
