1st Baseball Player-Turned-Broadcaster Was A Character - & A Canadian!

Sometimes you stumble on a story and decide to look at it out of curiosity. I'm glad I did with this one. It's a terrific tale about a guy most of us have never heard of.

His name was Jack Graney and he played for Cleveland in the early 1900s and beyond. But he also holds two other distinctions - he was the first retired ball player to ever go behind a mic and call the game he once played. And it turns out he was born in St. Mary's, Ontario.

If that wasn't enough, the part about how Larry the Dog used to chase live balls in play during a game by running out on the field is just icing on this cake.

What a great story about a long forgotten player - and his place in radio history.

A dog in the dugout. A horse in the outfield. A Hall of Famer behind the microphone

Found a grainy pic of Graney and Larry, the first dog to ever be an official team mascot. What a good boy! (Larry, not the ball player. I have no idea if he was a good boy or not!)
