CKTB Forced To Simulcast CFRB's Morning Show

There isn't a lot of explanation about what happened - other than a "staffing" issue - but CKTB listeners wound up hearing John Moore instead of the regular Tim Denis morning show Monday. It's not clear how that can be true. 610 generally has a lot of back-up and is the only local iHeart talk station in the area that regularly does live morning shows on both the weekends and most stat holidays. So there's almost always someone (usually Stephanie Vivier) to fill in during someone's absence.

There is nothing on their website or Twitter even referring to the issue, which is also unusual. Whatever happened, the station does appear to be at full power, but is experiencing extremely annoying audio "hits" in its signal and you have to wonder what else may be going on.

The sudden change means St. Catharines listeners won't be hearing any local programming until at least 2 PM, when Tom McConnell is scheduled to take the chair. Hopefully, they'll have whatever is going on fixed by then.

Those audio hits have been going on for weeks now but today they are worse.

Re: CKTB Forced To Simulcast CFRB's Morning Show

They had issues with their transmitter back in May 2021, when a storm damaged equipment at the transmitter. It took from May 31 to June 4th for them to get and install the part, during which time they were all but off the air from a very weak back-up transmitter. I wonder if that's what's happening again that's causing it to go on for so long.

Re: CKTB Forced To Simulcast CFRB's Morning Show

Come to think of it, if there was a "staffing" issue, would that prevent them from inserting their own commercials, traffic and news? None of that is on the air Monday morning, which makes whatever's going on even more unusual. Perhaps there's some reason they can't physically go into the building on Yates St. Otherwise an operator could be behind the board and at least keep the breaks local.

I'm sure hearing about the traffic on the D.V.P. isn't doing much for the commuting audience in St. Catharines.

Re: CKTB Forced To Simulcast CFRB's Morning Show

Here's a post this morning from their social media.

"Good Morning. Due to some unfortunate circumstances we are not able to broadcast our morning show today. Like many organizations lately, we have some staff off due to illness, but today it runs into some pre-scheduled vacation time.

On Tuesday, Niagara in the Morning will be back with Steph Vivier continuing to fill-in for the vacationing Tim Denis. In the meanwhile, we will have our friends from Newstalk 1010 on this morning. Enjoy the rest of your day, and we'll be live and local this afternoon with Rod Mawhood filling in for Tom McConnell."

Not being able to run your morning show because of staffing levels tells you everything you need to know about where radio sits on Bell Media's priority list.

The audio problems are solved with CKTB. I have not noted them since Tuesday.
