Former CHML Morning Man Paul Hanover Dies At 97

He was known as the "Mayor of the Morning" on AM 900 for many years and began in radio way back in the 1940s. I remember him from my younger days as host of the CTV game show "It's Your Move," a charades-style show. A real pro and a veteran, he retired in 1991, and made it to the ripe old age of 97.

Re: Former CHML Morning Man Paul Hanover Dies At 97

A clip they played on CHML Monday afternoon has Hanover remembering radio jobs out of town, including Chatham, but he eventually came home to Hamilton and desperately wanted to work for AM 900.

He kept bugging them, until one day another announcer had a bit too much to drink and was so inebriated, he couldn't go on air. Hanover was around and they hired him as an emergency fill-in. He would spend most of the rest of his career there.

No word on whether he ever took the besotted host he replaced out for another drink to say thanks...

In an era when personality was king, Paul Hanover was definitely radio royalty. His "gift of gab" and his ability to mingle with the public set the gold standard for all broadcasters.

RIP and shalom, Mayor of the Morning.

Through the years, someone occasionally would describe Paul as the Wally Crouter of Hamilton.

With all due respect to Wally, Paul was the Paul Hanover of Hamilton.
