I wish him well...he was an inspiration to me during his days in Vancouver at CKLG and LG FM.

The unfortunate news too many expected: Roy Hennessey passed away in Toronto earlier this week. He was 80 but will forever be young in the memory of those out west in B.C. who grew up listening to him.

Have to admit it didn't click with me right away, but I remember the name in a different context.
Although he was best known as a B.C. morning veteran, Hennessy had a major connection with Toronto radio - he was working for Standard Broadcasting when CFRB put him in charge of leading the change from music to all talk, a difficult transition for such a long-established radio station. He laid the foundation for what's there now, and stayed for the first five years of the then new-format.

FYIMusicNews.ca honours Hennessy's memory by reprinting a tribute from radio maven J.J. Johnston that outlines some amazing milestones from his career. It was originally posted in 2018 (which hopefully means its subject got to read it) and it details a lengthy and amazing life in radio, with lots of great anecdotes and side stories.
It's long but if you love radio tales, origin recaps and behind-the-scenes stories, it's worth a read.

The Globe & Mail often takes a while to publish obits like this one, but in this case, it's well worth the wait. This is a terrific summary of this radio legend's life, including comments from Charles Adler and Jody Vance, his radio stops along the way - including CFRB - and his encounter with the Beatles in the early 60s. Definitely a great career and it seems, a life well lived.
I never knew him but I can see why he was much admired.
