How Do You Broadcast Golf On The Radio?

Turns out it's both extremely simply and incredibly complex. I've never quite understood how you can cover a golf tournament without seeing it - it's not quite the same as baseball, football or hockey, where it's much easier to describe the action. In golf, there's a lot of waiting around for the next shot and once the ball lands, more waiting for the one that follows.

Yet it seems golf IS a big deal on the radio, at least for Sirius XM, which has a channel dedicated to the various tournaments. So how do they do it? Turns out there's a method to that madness about creating a play-by-play that doesn't leave a hole in one's imagination.

"...the team understands that the average listener only tunes in for somewhere between “12 and 25 minutes,” which means it is their job to provide the listener with all the info they need to know once every 12 minutes, over and over again, for the duration of the broadcast...."

"At the beginning of tournament weeks, Davis uses a stopwatch to measure the time it takes to walk from the green to the tee box of every hole."

What’s it like broadcasting golf for radio? For starters, nothing like TV
