An Embarrassing Moment On CityNews 680

The old adage 'never ad lib unless you're sure what you're talking about' came into play in a big way on CityNews 680 Saturday morning. It was one of their early newscasts, around 6 AM, when the male anchor decided to play around with a story about the Daytime Emmy Awards.

He started the yarn about the winners by noting "his favourite show," "The Young & The Restless" had a big victor. He then started to read the copy, noting Michael Morgan won as best actor in the show.

Then there was a slight pause, at which point he must have a very bad sinking feeling.

Michael Morgan was actually Mishael Morgan, and she won for best actress.

To his credit, he made the correction on-air, but it seems certain the "Y&R" isn't his "favourite" show after all, or he would certainly have known the difference!

Likely one for the Christmas Party tape - unless Rogers has cheapened out and isn't holding those any more.

Only one embarrassing moment? This is 680 News...

Their coast-to-coast overnight broadcast out of Vancouver is frequently filled with terrible errors and mispronunciations. It's been going on for a very long time, so they either don't know or don't care, as long as it doesn't cost them anything.

They could easily fill up a half-hour segment per week with corrections/clarifications if they had the will to do so. It would certainly improve their image as a news source.

Yet they have still a full radio news room, unlike 1010 and 640, with a live body, unlike 1010/640 and have way higher ratings than 1010/640.

I would say for a few mistakes that do in fact get corrected, they are clearly doing something right.   I just haven't heard any moment that somehow the facts had been so wrong, or if they did get it wrong that they never corrected it.     Clearly others haven't either if they are still listening as they are.

Your opinion on the station is fine, but lets be fair here.

Speaking of being fair, I haven't really noticed that many mistakes on 680 as long as it's the local crew doing the wheel. But they also deal with a ton more material in any given hour than either 1010 or 640 possibly could, so some mistakes are almost inevitable. Overall, I think 680 does well as the only all-news station in Toronto.

I'd be curious to see what would happen if anyone (say a 640) decided to go after them with their own all-news format, and have a city with two such outlets on the dial to choose from. This is the case in many other major markets in the U.S. and usually one is superior to the other in the ratings - and it's telling that almost all of them are now sharing frequencies, often with a 50K blowtorch on the AM side and an FM outlet acting as a translator.

News isn't one job on that station like it is on a station with a 5 minute top of the hour newscast.  It's local, regional, provincial, national and international news, traffic, weather, sports, entertainment and business.

Their overnights are absolutely unlistenable, especially on weekends and they used to be just as strong as the other dayparts.
