New Guidance About Using "Breaking News" Language

https://www.cnn.com/videos/business/2022/06/05/cnns-new-guidance-about-breaking-news-language.cnn/video/playlists/reliable-sources-highlights/?s=09

In the not so distant past we've had some discussion here on the big yellow board about how Newstalk 1010 has destroyed any value or impact in the words "Breaking News."

This is the radio station that has, on Moore than one occasion, interrupted a roundtable at five minutes to the top of the hour for "Breaking News! We have an important traffic report."

CNN has been raising the bar on what constitutes breaking news. Attached is a short video report. A positive event cascade across the broadcast industry following their lead would be logical and welcome.

Will Newstalk 1010 raise their bar too? Time will tell.

Re: New Guidance About Using "Breaking News" Language

EVERY news item in Lester Holt's NBC Evening News is "BREAKING NEWS!" to him.

Re: New Guidance About Using "Breaking News" Language

News is by its very name NEW. There are plenty of alternative adjectives if only the news writer has permission to discriminate. BREAKING NEWS can be used when details are sparse and are still arriving during the news broadcast. Other word choices include: THIS JUST IN (which I personally hate), ONGOING COVERAGE...., LATEST FROM THE SCENE...,Variety never hurts.
