Canadian Comedian & SNL Star Norm MacDonald Gone At Just 61

The SNL alum fought a quiet nine-year battle with cancer. Sadly, on Tuesday, the cancer won.

Greatest stand-up of all time, and a really sweet, intelligent man. The world is a lot less funny today.

Here's Norm talking with Marc Maron on his WTF podcast. It's, Norm, is brilliant and Marc isn't half bad either.

RIP🕯️

Re: Canadian Comedian & SNL Star Norm MacDonald Gone At Just 61

I wonder how many people remember his short-lived ABC sitcom, The Norm Show, in which he played a suspended NHL hockey player. Created by MacDonald and Bruce Helford, one of the guys behind The Drew Carey Show, which it resembled in many ways - and even had some of the same cast members. The theme. Too Bad," was a song by Canadian group Doug & The Slugs.

Re: Canadian Comedian & SNL Star Norm MacDonald Gone At Just 61

Norm presented "Weekend Update" while he was on SNL...  during the 90s...  during the Simpson trial...

Don Ohlmeyer was a head at NBC, and a good friend of the juice....  Ohlmeyer ultimately fired Norm over his constant, relentless jokes about O.J.

This Youtube compilation starts with Dennis Miller who spells it out "in sports terms"...

Norm was also a frequent guest on Letterman during this era as well...   lots of the Letterman / Norm clips also on Youtube....

But, what if a guy had a theory that Germans love David Hasselhoff ?  Norm's appearances on the Dennis Miller show on I think HBO were legendary. RIP funny man.

The one conservative comedian who was actually very funny. That's a damn shame.

Re: Canadian Comedian & SNL Star Norm MacDonald Gone At Just 61

MacDonald stated in the Deadline article that “[NBC's west coast president Don] Ohlmeyer would watch Leno kill every night for 15 minutes. Every joke, huge laughs, and then I’d do 10 minutes a week and sometimes not get laughs.”

Norm was the type of personality that even if his brand of humor wasn't quite your style, it was hard to dislike the guy.

He will be missed. RIP.

Re: Canadian Comedian & SNL Star Norm MacDonald Gone At Just 61

His very last "role" is yet to air. He voiced a character named "Yaphit" on Seth MacFarlane's sci-fi show "The Orville" and apparently was in a few of the upcoming episodes. The alien is a gelatinous blob and MacDonald never appears on camera.

The show has been off TV for years thanks to COVID-production delays and the special effects it needs, and it's gone to Hulu in the U.S. after originally airing on Fox.

Rogers' CityTV aired it in Canada and a few years ago, I called a Rogers programming rep to ask if they were still going to put it on free TV here. She said as far as she knew, they still had the rights and they intended to show it on City whenever it came back.

We'll see if that happens. Canadians can't legally get Hulu on this side of the border, so if City doesn't show it, you can rest assured Bell will bid for the rights and it will probably end up on either Crave or CTV Sci Fi.

I wouldn't wish it on anyone, but number three hadn't bloody well be one of the Pythons...

Re: Canadian Comedian & SNL Star Norm MacDonald Gone At Just 61

Norm wasn't necessarily an A list comedian/performer all the time with the public, but he was with his peers.  In fact most placed Norm MacDonald in a category of his own, and that is the biggest compliment.  The comments from people like David Letterman, Conan O'Brien, Steve Martin, Seth Rogan, Jimmy Fallon, Whitney Cummings, Adam Sandler  Jon Stewart, Jim Carrey, Seth Meyers, etc. etc. confirmed how much Norm was respect, admired and loved.

A lot of comedians have commented on Norm's performance for Bob Sagat's Roast.  The program apparently was one of the most graphic and filthy roasts filled with more profanity for any performer on television.  When Norm came to do his part, he  did "Dad Jokes".  At first nobody was laughing. Norm's jokes had no swearing, nothing sexual, just something that a father might tell his 5 year old kids. The audience was clearly confused and thought Norm was bombing    But the comedians in the crowd and at high table soon  got it, and thought it was brilliant.  Here is a bunch of tributes including some great clips from Vulture.com. https://www.vulture.com/article/norm-macdonald-comedian-tributes.html

Re: Canadian Comedian & SNL Star Norm MacDonald Gone At Just 61

Didn't know that CTV Ottawa bureau chief Joyce Napier was Norm MacDonald's sister in law.  She is married to CBC news correspondent Neil MacDonald, Norm's brother.  CTV News Channel ran a little clip of Joyce interviewing Norm from a few years ago, when he was visiting them.  Small world..

Great. While they're at it, how about a hologram tour of some sort?
Or is that just a music thing?
