NUMERIS Overview: PPM Ratings - Sept. 2016

As summer slides into the distance, it’s time to look back with the help of today’s release of the latest radio ratings.  The new PPM release from Numeris (formerly BBM) completes the thirteen week period covering May 30th to August 28th, 2016.

Toronto: Bragging rights at the top of the ratings heap go to CHFI-FM once again with a 9.4% share of hours tuned for A12+ (down from 9.8% last time out) with BOOM-FM quickly gaining ground posting a 9.3% (up from 8.6%).

CHFI-FM takes the #1 spot with the ladies 25-54 delivering a 13.4% share (down from 14.5%) followed by CHUM-FM with 12.6% (down from 14.9%).

BOOM-FM holds the #1 spot for males 25-54, posting a 10.0% share (down from 10.4% in the last 13 week book) followed by Q107 at 9.1% (up from 7.9%).

SPORTSNET590 leads the way for M18-34 with an 8.9% share tied with 92.5KISS-FM also at 8.9%.

For F18-34, CHFI-FM tops the list posting a 15.7% (up from 15.2%)

Virgin 4.9
Kiss 4.5

How long before Kiss overtakes Virgin?

Kiss should be ahead. While the two stations play pretty much the same music, including songs which are played for months too long, Kiss has the better on air lineup. However, Kiss needs a stronger signal. While this is now ancient history, if Rogers hadn't messed with Kiss the first time around (moving from mainstream Top 40 to all hip hop) they would have owned the CHR market in Toronto.

Between Kiss and Virgin, I don't think they care who is on top, just as long as they both have more than a 4 share each.

The point is?  Once the Kiss takes effect...the Virgin will cease to exist.

At those numbers?  They don't really even now.

Kiss?  I dunno.  Virgin?  It's all been done and it's all being done more successfully.  YOUR music sucks.

Radio legend Pat Holiday - who's now a consultant (isn't almost everybody?) - has his own take on the latest numbers and what they mean. I find them interesting, although I'm not entirely sure how he can list TSN 1050 as ever trending "up" with any demo, especially since there are more people on your average subway train than listen to this sad comedown for what was once one of Toronto's biggest radio stations.

Poor 640. Maybe a few more motivational posters around the place would help in turning it around.

Does the PPM pick up a tone for the HD radio feed? If so, maybe going back to some sort of music format and giving away free HD radios would be smart...

As agencies specify what time their clients want their radio commercials to run, has anyone considered staging listener polls to measure specific time slots (instead of measuring by station, 24/7)?
