Newest Additions To ‘Classic Rock’ Stations May Make You Feel Old

This seems like someone looking for a headline that's not really there, but an article in Fortune Magazine points out there are increasing "adds" to some classic rock formats that could be a sign of the times - not to mention aging demos. They argue that the Rolling Stones, Led Zepplin and Pink Floyd are starting to share airtime with Britney Spears and Lady Gaga.

This really isn't anything new. There has always been around a 20-30 year gap where stations that air this music will adjust it for an aging population, in order to attract a slightly younger audience. I remember in the 70s, when it was all about the 50s and CHUM would do "Greaser" weekends. The 80s became all about the 60s for nostalgia fans, and by 2000, the 80s had a resurgence. And on and on it goes.

It seems to me this is the same phenomenon in action and it will be ever thus as long as radio exists. Anyway, see what you think.

Re: Newest Additions To ‘Classic Rock’ Stations May Make You Feel Old

That's why radio has formats.
Boom is clearly 70's 80's 90's.
The odd late 60's or early 2000's tune sneaks in, but the station is mostly focused on those 3 decades.
Then you have the 90's 2k and today stations.

A station that calls itself "Classic hits" really has to decide what it is doing. The days of CKEY (Key 590) or Zed 97 point three are long over.

Re: Newest Additions To ‘Classic Rock’ Stations May Make You Feel Old

See my post from yesterday regarding CJOY in Guelph.  This is exactly what they are doing.  This morning a cut from Shawn Mendes and Lady Gaga.  They are playing more since they also feature more recent cancon in addition to songs listed in the Fortune article.   CJOY is AM so this slight format change makes it unique for them.  Not many AM stations anywhere are playing music and even fewer mixing in songs after 2000. They bill themselves as The Royal Cities Greatest Hits and also ID's saying they play the best from the 70's, 80,s and 90's.

I tried to check their playlist from a few days ago but their listings seem not to be working well. CJOY has a rough go with a small coverage area at 1460 and the city of Guelph being overwhelmed by out of market radio stations from Toronto, Hamilton, Kitchener, London, St. Catherines, Woodstock etc.  and all come in clearly off air.  Magic 106 on FM does alright with their hot a/c format.  They have been trying to make some in roads in Kitchener/Waterloo but with limited success so far. Only a 1% share in the most recent rating,  They do have some K/W advertisers.
