The One Relevant Early Sunday Morning Show On Toronto Radio

I woke up very early Sunday morning and couldn't get back to sleep. So I turned on the radio. Talk about Hobson's choice. If you're looking for music, that's fine. All the usual stations are playing all the usual songs. But there's nothing special about any of them.

But if you want something to keep the brain active, the pickings are a lot slimmer. CFRB is re-airing old John Moore interviews, before segueing into CP24 off of TV, which most here agree does not work well on the radio. John Oakley is replaying old chats from the past week on 640. And CBC is playing some sort of God-awful music.

But at 8 AM, there's a shining beacon on the local airwaves that I've been listening to for several months. It airs on 640, and it started life as something called "The Announcers" but has since been retitled "A Word In Edgewise."

Hosted by retired CKNW host Jon McComb, it features two Corus radio personalities from their stations across the country discussing the week's headlines and putting their own spin on things. It's kind of like an hour long version of CFRB's daily Roundtable segment.

Sunday's show had Jas Johol, the afternoon drive host at CKNW Vancouver and Kelly Cutrara from AM 640. Last week they had Greg Brady partnered with another Corus host from Edmonton.

It's not the greatest radio show you'll ever hear. But in the middle of a vast wasteland of rerolls, automation and unoriginal programming, it's a shining jewel. And if I'm up early enough, I always try to catch it. When I'm out for that early morning walk with the dog, I'm grateful it's there.

Re: The One Relevant Early Sunday Morning Show On Toronto Radio

I'm not sure you can consider it a re-roll if it's just scheduled at a different time. But I suppose it depends on how you define it. The John Moore stuff has already aired, as has the Oakley repeat.

But Sunday at 8 AM is the only time period where 640 runs this show, so to me, that makes it an original.

Either way, at least there's some there, there and it's not an hour long dated repeat (like CFRB running Bill Carroll at night talking about the Ukraine invasion from 12 hours earlier. In the interim, there's been an attack on a nuclear facility and he doesn't mention it since it hadn't happened yet. That's just embarrassing putting something that old on the air, but it's obvious Bell doesn't care. It fills the airtime without costing them anything and that's more important than a potential nuclear explosion.)

And it's not a paid time program selling supplements that don't work. (Ironically, 640 follows "Edgewise" with its own paid time shill show for an investment manager, at which point my dial automatically goes somewhere else.)

I'm glad they delay it until Sunday morning, because there's nothing else worth listening to at that time and it fills the bill perfectly for me. The RB Trivia Show that starts at 9 is fun, but that's silly, not serious. And I like a mix of both.
