The first sign that something was up came in late November, when Ryan Doyle disappeared from The Rush on CFRB. On Jan. 27th, another post announced that Jay Michaels was departing the same show, headed for a long coveted morning gig at Bell's CHOM-FM in Montreal.
It's now March, and so far 1010's important drive home afternoon shift has become a strange amalgam of Jim Richards (who's really supposed to be doing all nights) taking the mic solo from 2-4 PM, followed by an ever-changing guest spot for the final two hours. It's a pretty weird arrangement, with no permanent co-host ever named.
I'm just wondering: is this what they're going with? Or are they planning to finally name some new bodies to take over this valuable timeslot? It seems odd to have a rotating different guest every week and that it's taking this long to permanently decide who gets the PM drive shift on one of the big stations in the country's major market.
For the moment, it seems, they're in no Rush.

I find this lack of clear direction interesting too. The co-hosts are often female (Tamara Cherry, Deb Hutton, Amanda Galbraith) so I wonder if they're going for a male/female banter vibe, completely countering "The Rush", "two bro's" concept with Jay and Ryan.
Incidentally, David Cooper has posted on his Twitter account he'll continue to be the overnight "Showgram" host at least through March, ostensibly "filling in" for Jim Richards. He previously told Toronto Mike that his arrangement (I assume contract) ran through February only. Perhaps they're going with a month-to-month renewal of that or some firm decision about Richards and "The Rush" co-host will happen this month.

Once ratings season comes rolling around, it is expected that "regulars" are in place.
If they choose not to obey that rule, I hope they know what they are doing...

Michaels was decent. Doyle was marginal.
Richards is what he's always been: nigh unlistenable, regardless of who he's paired with.
Yesterday's show was a good example. He readies a topic by playing a tangentially-related Agar audio clip. OK. But then he plays it again. And again. And again.

What blows me away is that they don't get professional radio hosts instead of political consultants? Some of what I have heard is just embarrassing. My guess is they won't get great ratings, it's like they are giving this time slot to 640 and CBC ..

Tamara Cherry is the co-host all this week and once again today, PTSD and trauma were a focal point during the show. However neither host seemed capable of broaching the subject in a personal way, talking to the listener, making it relatable and real, a skill John Moore, Robert Turner and other radio on-air talent bring to their audience on a regular basis.
Instead, the two hosts talked to each other until they eventually took a call from a woman who agreed with their views.
To assume everyone has a working knowledge of PTSD/trauma is at best lazy and at worst thoughtless. PTSD as a diagnosis gets thrown around these days and overused so it's impact has started to lose meaning.
They had an opportunity to educate and create more understanding for people who are living with trauma, maybe even helping those who are experiencing PTSD seek out help. Instead they had another insider baseball conversation, repeating talking points already made during their previous discussions about trauma.
To top it off both Tamara and Jim bitched in a defensive, petty manner about the people who were texting in. After 20 frustrating minutes I turned the radio to a different station.
Tamara and Jim do not come across like they care about involving and educating/entertaining their audience. They talk at, not to the listener. And that's their biggest problem.
Where oh where is 1010's "Director of Talent" and why isn't something being done to fix. this. show.
R.I.P. The Rush
