RF & Condos Downtown

https://www.archpaper.com/2020/02/skytower-toronto/

I came across this today, but dont know if its approved to be built or not however, one thing comes to mind.  How is such a residential structure approved in the world of Safety Code 6 for RF being that close to the CN Tower?  Imagine living on the top floor of this building with the full beam of all stations into your window.   Its probably happening already these days in the existing buildings but this is going to be the tallest one.

Re: RF & Condos Downtown

The real RF story here is how will this impact the FCP stations? This proposal, plus the big towers going up at Yonge & Bloor, will mean that FCP would be 4th or 5th tallest in the city. It's mostly FMs up there, and yet it's better for them to be in the middle of a cluster than be near the lake. FCP better keep their broadcast tenants happy or they may be jumping ship in a few years.

Re: RF & Condos Downtown

Jumping ship, is probably not going to make economical sense, in 4 or 5 years for some stations on FCP.   The investment in a new transmitter room, new antenna, regulatory approvals is expesive and a long process.  And although FCP is one of the most expensive transmitting sites in N. America if not the world, - hey they charge tenants for each HD-2, HD-3 and HD-4 and SCMO carrier - no one else that I know of has done that….is a 2ndary site going to be any cheaper on an annual basis?  Almost all FCP stations have to protect other stations in various directions, so a “master antenna” approach, if it could be designed, won’t be cheap.  Since most stations are run by bean-counters, until their ratings and revenues drop precipitiously and someone can demostrate that it’s multipath related, don’t expect senior management to embrace a large multi-million dollar transmitter site investment.  IMHO

Not sure how up-to-date this is (it was published in 2006) but SOWNY member Scott Fybush was up on FCP's roof way back when to check out the equipment there. Worth a look if you're interested in that kind of thing.

The roof of FCP is a complete mess and an eyesoar but it is what it is.
