AM740 To Salute Recently Retired PM Drive Host Norm Edwards

Gene Stevens' "Vintage Favourites" show will pay tribute to the retired Edwards, the former afternoon drive host, on a special edition of the show next Sunday at 3 PM.

"Norm announced his retirement recently, and I wanted to make sure we hear his story, play some of his favourite songs and share some ‘tall-tales’."

If you like behind-the-scenes radio stories, this could be a good time to listen.

The 740 website notes that Edwards is the longest serving host on the station, stretching all the way back to the 1250 CHWO Oakville days. He's been at 740 since 2001.

Re: AM740 To Salute Recently Retired PM Drive Host Norm Edwards

My favourite story he told was about how he started in radio. His first gig was in Dryden, Ont. - but his first ever appearance was on the Pete 'N Geets Show on CHUM-FM! How in the world did that happen?

Edwards was still young and wanted to get into radio, when he wrote the 104.5 duo and asked if he could meet them. They invited him to the studio at 1331 Yonge St. and he watched in awe as they did their thing on air.

Eventually, they invited him to speak up and contribute to what was then a far more-free form format and that was his first moment on the air. Hard to top having CHUM as your radio debut!

He hadn't told one of his radio-crazed friends, who also wanted a career in the business. That guy woke up that morning, turned on CHUM-FM and was dumbfounded to hear his pal's voice coming out of the speaker!

The kind of story that could only happen in radio.
