A Conspicuous Absence From A Broadcast Journalism Statement

Not sure how many have seen this rather unusual piece that's appeared on the Toronto Star site - among other places. Rather than be labelled "news," "opinion" or some other designation, it's simply called "Statement." It goes on to detail how journalists are being mistreated in public and online, through racist remarks and even the threat of physical violence or death. And it notes emphatically that it has to stop.

All in all, there's little to disagree with in the "statement," which is endorsed by some of the biggest media entities in the country, including the CBC, Post Media, Corus, The Canadian Press, Bell Media and others. What interested me is one that's not there - Rogers Media.

As a leading presenter of news on TV, radio and the web, you might have thought they'd sign on to something like this. Unless it was left out by error, it's a very strange and almost inexplicable omission.

Statement: Canadian media united in support of journalists against online hate, threats and harassment

Never seen an industry that gives out so many self-accolades and thinks it's beyond reproach when criticized...it's like media outlets and journos have a monopoly on telling us how it is or should be and if regular minions disagree or bite back they are the ones with the problem...I've seen enough fear and hate and lies and opinion passed as news by so-called media elites and professionals in the last year or so...grow some skin (and balls) and take the abuse many of you deserve...stop being puppets to your overlords pulling strings and setting agendas...unfortunately many are now just wanting to hang onto their jobs in spite their true beliefs or why they entered 'journalism' in the first place...

No matter how you feel about journalists these days, no one should be threatened with rape or death because of what they do for a living. I think we can all agree that's way over the line.

Being threatened with death, rape, or other disgusting things is not "criticism". That should not be accepted as normal behaviour anywhere.

Well, there it is - the worst possible take.
