It looks similar to "The Boat That Rocked," the film about Radio Caroline in the U.K. But this movie details efforts to crack the government's hold on broadcasting in New Zealand in the 60s. It's called "1480 Radio Pirates" and shows the until now untold story of the fight for free radio on the other side of the world.
It's a story I never heard of before (and only found out about thanks to a post on The Oldies Music Board.) It's available for rent or purchase on a host of services, including Google Play and YouTube, or is free with spots if you have the Roku Channel.
According to the publicity:
"It's 1965 and rock music is shaking up the world but not in New Zealand. Richard Davis a 23 year old journalist is determined to break the Government's monopoly on broadcasting and bring rock n' roll to a younger generation, and at the same time hold onto the woman he loves. Based on a true story."
If nothing else, it shows how lucky we were on this side of the world that we didn't end up with this in-hindsight ridiculous attempt to let government control everything you heard on the airwaves. (It would have meant no CHUM, CKEY or CKFH, no Wally Crouter on CFRB, as an example.) As heavy-handed as I think the CRTC can be at times, at least we had free airwaves and competition and that made everybody better.
Even if you're not likely to rent it, this could turn up on a Crave or a streaming service eventually. Keep an eye (or ear) out for it. New movies about radio are increasingly rare. Based on the trailer (below) this looks like an interesting, if not overly familiar, one.

Thanks to the Oldies Board Admin. for pointing out this film isn't, in fact, new. It actually came out in 2014. I'm surprised it hasn't turned up anywhere long before this. That hasn't changed the fact that I'd never heard of it or that I'd watch it if it ever finds its way to TV.
It turns out it IS online on what looks to be a not exactly legal site, but I don't believe in piracy so I won't be watching it there.

Update to this old thread. This movie is now available legally, for free and with no geoblocking off of Tubitv.com.
If you have even the remotest interest in it, you can find it here.
