The Merv Griffin Show Returns

Merv Griffin was never my favourite show or host, but as a glimpse of showbiz history for a period of the 60s and 70s, the talk program was remarkable. Now Tubi TV has collected a series of old episodes, featuring some pretty amazing guests. People like an impossibly young Jerry Seinfeld, Muhammad Ali, Jack Benny, Lucille Ball, Richard Pryor, Phil Spector, Martin Luther King, Richard Nixon, Jack Benny, Don Rickles and more.

If you're in a nostalgic mood (and it doesn't appear to need a VPN), you can take a glimpse at what's on offer here.

Although I still prefer Rick Moranis as Merv, repeating his mantra, "We'll be right back, we'll be right back, we'll be right back." Or starring as Merv of Mayberry.

Re: The Merv Griffin Show Returns

Some of SCTV's sketch comedy was better and funnier than the programs they were mocking. To tie in Merv Griffin and The Andy Griffith Show was brilliant.  All of the character impersonations were bang on.  And Otis taking Opie fishing and getting him drunk, hilarious.

Hey, this is something that Mike (ego) Richards could run...

re-make the Merv Griffin Show, and he could be Exec. Producer AND Host, after an exhaustive search / casting of course.

just an idea....

Re: The Merv Griffin Show Returns

An article was published Friday on this very topic.

Merv Griffin did talk show the right way

(Anyone remember when sidekick Arthur Treacher lent his name to a fish and chips franchise?)

Re: The Merv Griffin Show Returns

Here's a infamous slice from the Merv show.

The Beach Boys doing a song written by Charles Manson. He was furious about the fact that he was not given a credit and some of the lyrics were changed. That may have been one of the grievances that eventually culminated in the Tate/La Bianca murders. You can google the sordid details but as a b-side it is  Manson's entry into the Billboard Hot One Hundred. but Dennis Wilson got the credit for the song.

Merv initially gets the name of the track wrong.

Re: The Merv Griffin Show Returns

I'd likely enjoy those clips. But IMHO, Merv was a mediocre interviewer, a mediocre singer and not very funny. He couldn't hold a candle to Johnny as a talk-show host. But thanks to his talk show, game shows and casinos, Merv made far more money than Johnny. So good for him.

No biggie but the host in this clip is in fact Mike Douglas not Merv Griffin

Re: The Merv Griffin Show Returns

Thank you for the correction Uncle Fester. I gotta get my Mike and Merv straightened out. A case of faulty memory and bad face recognition.

I will try and remember not to post it again on any future Mike Douglas thread. This was the second time I posted that clip. The first time was in 2017 on a WFMU thread and some folks were not that enarmored by the song but Manson, Merv and Mike aside I always thoght the production on the track was nice.
