Legendary Montreal Morning Man Leaving After 35 Years
Even people who've never turned on a radio in Montreal may know the name Terry DiMonte. He's the Roger Ashby-Jungle Jay-Wally Crouter kind of icon, who's woken up Quebecers for decades on CHOM-FM and also CJAD. Now he's calling it quits at the end of the month.

The one thing that really set him apart from the pack was he was about as everyday-average-person in his manner. Unlike many rock radio morning hosts, he never went for outrageous stunts or go for the lowest common denominator topics. He never tried to demean listeners or talk down to them. He may not be the most exciting personality to grace morning airwaves but he didn't need to be. Just being real was more than enough for a couple generations of listeners.

This story makes it pretty clear that Bell wasn't interested in a new contract.
It really is sad how much talent they have pushed out the door.
Global did a great story about it and CTV just has the video provided by CHOM (unless I missed it)

Terry sounds like he is the type of of guy to listen to before he hangs up the mic. I like the way that he mentions that he still has a hand in what songs he plays in the morning. CHOM has remained true to their album rock roots. Listening to the station they are definitely heavier than Q107 and play new music and more album cuts, but I guess that would be the hit/non hit thingy. Great music when I was listening mid morning into lunch today.
CHOM has always been a hit with the francophone audience in Montreal. Almost 2/3 of their listeners are french speaking. Interesting, heard a commercial for a Genesis concert planned for the Bell Centre this October. They just added a second show, at the end of the spot it said the concert was a presentation of
Donald K. Donald Productions. Didn't know that they were still around and presenting shows. Donald K. Tarlton owns Aquarius Record which is still active. Aquarius one of Canada's longest independent record labels (maybe the longest?) has been around since 1969.

Friday was his last day on air, filled with tons of special guests and more than a few tears.

A true class act. His realness and lack of ego is something not often heard on rock morning shows these days.
CHOM is one of the few heritage stations having much the same on air lineup for many years. They gave a similar sendoff to 40-year veteran Tootall when he retired a few years ago. It's good to see some legendary stations haven't forgotten those who contributed significantly to that achievement.

This is interesting. Found this cut of CHOM's morning man Terry Dimonte on his last show with Prime Minister J. Trudeau. Not a bad clip, and it is obvious that Justin was a CHOM listener growing up and became a good friend of Terry. Like Trudeau's little crack about his mom and The Rolling Stones...

Well, that was certainly a short retirement. Former CHOM-FM morning man Terry DiMonte returns on Sept. 8th, starting a podcast with his old partner-in-crime, Ted Bird. Some here may remember Ted from his early years doing sports at CFTR.
