July 1st Is Not Just Canada Day...

Turns out, it's also the anniversary of the very first TV commercial ever broadcast. It lasted all of nine seconds and cost a dollar a second. It's doubtful many saw it back in 1941, but if you were somehow watching that day, you were literally "watch-ing" TV.

Sadly, things have only gotten more expensive and spots have gotten more expansive since then. But it was on July 1st exactly 80 years ago that it aired. And since then, many more advertisers have put the "Bull" in Bulova.

WNBC-TV and WCBS-TV in New York - originally WNBT and WCBW - turn 80 years old on July 1st as well. These were the first two commercial television stations in the United States.
