Ex TSN Vancouver hosts arrive on CHEK TV in Victoria

Toronto sports talk peeps will know the name Don Taylor from his Sportsnet TV days, he and Rick Dhaliwal got turfed by TSN (or astro-turfed)...in February and in similar fashion to former BC sports talk show host Rob Fai, Donnie and Dhali have landed on an independent TV station(CHEK TV) in Victoria BC.

They are hosting a 2 hour mid morning sports talk show, called Donnie and Dhali...this is 2 examples of downsized TSN Vancouver hosts landing a gig on more alternative mediums.

This begs the question, what needs to happen to have locally owned, independent media to really offer a a viable alternative.

I was speaking with former Chum guy (Benji Karch) today and he's now at Durham Radio and some staffers equate that group of stations to the early, creative, free form days of Chum-fm...

How can we make it advantageous for independently owned TV and radio stations to succeed and grow in this country?

Here is more on Donnie and Dhali's new gig...the show is called The Team.

CHEK is an interesting station, they've been employee-owned since CanWest tried to shut it down in 2009. These days they put out a sizable amount of local programming, including non-news. Just a couple nights ago they broadcast a (socially distanced) concert from the Victoria Symphony, which even included interviews with members.

You don't see that from most Canadian broadcasters these days.
