New Movie Tells The Mostly Fake Story Of A Radio Station Held Hostage

There's a new movie coming out on March 26th and it's a rarity, because a great deal of it takes place in a radio station. We haven't seen that in a while. "Shoplifters of the World," is purported to be based on a true story, but that's a bit of a stretch.

It tells the story of a disgruntled fan of the rock group The Smiths, who gets so angry when they split up, that he takes a radio DJ in Denver hostage and forces him to play the group's records over and over and over for four hours, while his friends and fans are left to react to the situation.

It turns out something like that did happen - almost. The kid did go to a local Denver station in 1987 but either couldn't get in or changed his mind. Cops arrested him before he got anywhere near the studio and though he was armed, no one was ever in danger.

Here's the full story if you're interested.

The movie is based on what might have happened had he actually gotten in and was able to force the playing of a single artist for many hours.

I have no idea whether the flick is any good, but you can take a gander at the trailer and decide if this is something you'd want to see. That is, if you can find a place or streaming service that's showing it. Although if you're not a fan of The Smiths, you might want to skip it, because they're a huge part of the soundtrack.

Re: New Movie Tells The Mostly Fake Story Of A Radio Station Held Hostage

There are only a handful of movies I can think of that involve radio. And some are more about the industry than others.

Here are a few that come to mind where the medium plays a major role:

FM
American Graffiti
Airheads
Good Morning Vietnam
The Boat That Rocked (also known as "Pirate Radio")
Pump Up The Volume
Talk Radio
Private Parts (The Howard Stern story)
Play Misty For Me and
The Next Voice You Hear

That last one is a very strange movie. It's a bizarre 1950 flick that involves people all over the world hearing the voice of God coming out of their radios at the exact same time of day. At first, it's believed to be a gimmick or a hoax, but the fact it interrupts every station on earth and each country hears the broadcast in its own language soon convinces people it's true. In typical movie fashion, though, you never actually hear the voice, because every time God is supposed to appear, the scene cuts away to something else.

At least we can presume being on all those stations at once means His ratings are good!
