I mentioned this in a previous thread, but it seemed to deserve one of its own.
Now that he's off the air, Jon Pole lets loose on a podcast about the firings at Bell and CJAD, including noting it took them all of 90 seconds to cut him after so many years at the station. He swears frequently and doesn't mince words, but it's an interesting look (listen?) at what happened this week.
If his first-hand experience is any indication, the quarterbacks at Bell fumbled the entire play. But it's the "players" and the listeners who were the biggest losers.
You can hear it here.

This was really satisfying to listen to RA, thanks for posting it. (I will say this tho, the stark flickering setup for the podcast, while cool looking could easily trigger a migraine within moments.)
I like what he had to say, and will be subscribing if he does launch a podcast. I didn't get the chance to hear him on CJAD, but always enjoyed him on 1010 when he filled in for vacationing hosts.
Two things Jon did on this podcast that I wish more on-air hosts and people who podcast would do. First, his cadence is natural and he actually takes a moment or two and pauses when speaking, giving the listener a bit of breathing space. It's so easy on the ears and brain. Second, he has almost no verbal crutches when he does pause. No constant ums or ahs. One could get used to that. I wish more broadcasters could manage it.
Here's to more Jon Pole content. 👏👏👏
That's a bit rich from a guy who runs a company with two employees per station.

You're really judging a guy for employing people in small market radio?
News Flash - small markets have always had small staff.
You're also misinformed. The only market w/ two-staff is Brighton (3500 people) which works with Cobourg (20 min away) which has a staff of 15.
You're missing the most important point - Cobourg/Brighton employ more NEWS people than Newstalk 1010.

One company (MyFM) run by radio guy.
One BIG company (CFRB, CFRA, CJAD, etc.) run by accountants.

I'm judging him for NOT employing people. He inherited the Cobourg staff from the previous owner. The only station that has two people is Brighton? Are you sure? How many people in Port Elgin? In Nappanee? In Kincardine?
Yes I did listen. Before basically saying he agreed with the cuts and swore in an oh so edgy fashion, he nearly threw his shoulder out patting himself on the back for being "pretty damn good" at running the fastest growing radio company. It's pretty easy to constantly be the fastest growing company when hiring one person means a 50% increase in staff. I was in a town where one of his stations was the only game in town on a Friday and through the weekend and the person I was staying with listened because they were supporting local. The entire station on the Friday was a community calendar stretched over 6 hours of voice tracks that were completely disconnected from the low tempo AC music that surrounded them. It sounded like two things that didn’t match but were sandwiched together. On the weekend I happened to be at an event they were the main sponsor of. Other than the MyFM logo being on the sign that listed the sponsors they weren't there. No vehicle, no set up, no people. The event wasn't mentioned on the air all day, not even on the obviously networked noon newscast with no local stories, which had two voices of completely different sound quality, presumably doing different segments from two different places. The legal ID had the name of the town with the emphasis on the wrong syllable. Yes, the name of the town was said incorrectly on the legal ID that ran every hour for the three days I was there. At the event that MyFM sponsored but wasn't at, a station from the closest medium market was there meeting people.
Sorry, but I don't understand all the love given to such poor radio. It's not relevant it's not entertaining and it employs almost no one, but one guy makes money at it, so rah-rah? I don't know him, so it's nothing personal, he just creates terrible radio and gets talked about like he is curing cancer. I don't get it.

I agree that the whole thing was a disgrace. But I listened to only about 10 minutes of the podcast, during which he repeated and repeated and repeated himself about the 90-second issue. OK, we get it. Move on.
