Toronto Star Front Page

That was a dramatic front page opinion piece and graphic in the Toronto Star yesterday. New owners Paul Rivett and Jordan Bitove penned a column on the inaction and state of Ontario's long term care homes. The graphic representing the 2,721 residents and eight staff who have passed away as of December 30th from COVID-19 was effective.

As mentioned in the piece, the problems of underfunding and low staff levels., low pay and poor training have been going on for decades and the pandemic has made the gaps in care for the elderly painfully obvious.  Most of the problems tend to be with the privately run homes rather than the not for profit municipal and provincial nursing homes.

I give the Star full marks for this and have noticed subtle and positive changes starting to happen with the paper.  It was fantastic that the annual Toronto Star Santa Claus Fund far exceeded it's target this year of $1.2 million dollars.  The goal was changed to $1.6 million a few weeks ago and even this one was surpassed.  With everything that happened in 2020 this says so much about Star readers and their generous donations.  Over 45,000 underprivileged children in the GTA received Christmas presents because of this fundraiser which has happened every year since 1906.

Back when Rivett and Bitove bought Torstar in July, they asked readers to email their thoughts and suggestions about The Star and other papers in the chain.  I did write in and voiced a few concerns.  Three weeks later received an email back from Jordon Bitove thanking me for my comments.  It did look somewhat like a form email, however he did make two specific references to my concerns which impressed me.

My understanding is that the paper has been expanding the newsroom and hiring more staff.  This is encouraging and it will be interesting to see how the Star and all Toronto media survive and hopefully turn the corner and prosper once again in 2021.

=12pxMaybe they'll stop being the virtue-signaling Champagne socialists they've become, and start being active community leaders.  New owners and leadership can't hurt.

Unlike the Fascists at The Sun Charlie?

It's OK. I cancelled the Star years back. When I told them why, they got snarky. They are now dead, barren ground. Foul soil.

Re: Toronto Star Front Page

I was unavoidably offline for the past 24 hours or I might have weighed in on this sooner. It's definitely heading in a direction I'd rather not see, although I don't like to censor anything and it's OK for posters to disagree on a variety of issues. I'm not taking sides, but let's tone it down in the spirit of a more hopeful New Year.

By the way, I happen to know who Charlie is and he does have a good journalistic background, and I've actually admired his work over the years. Yes, he tends to be a bit taciturn at times, but hey, sometimes I do, too!

I hope we can call a truce to this, because, frankly, it's a pretty silly argument if you really think about it. The Star is the Star and the Sun is the Sun and never the twain shall meet.

Anyway, back to broadcasting-related topics (I hope.)

Congratulations. You unloaded on a minimum wage call centre worker who had probably never even read the Star, much less had any control over the content and they didn't offer you a discount to keep you, is that it?

Let's all imagine that COVID is over and we're back to standing in line at Timmy's. We may not see the world alike but, here in line waiting for our coffee, we're unlikely to get into an angry debate about it.

Sadly, no. It was an editor. I'm well aware that the canvassers and callers have no such association to the operation of the paper, but thanks!

"Charlie" plays the incognito game by not accepting private messages (and has not for some considerable time).

One attack on a poster leads to another. Cam we just stop it now, please? Thanks and Happy New Year.
