American Rock Podcast Looks At CanCon That Made It To U.S. Charts

You may have never heard of an American podcast called “Rare & Scratchy Rock & Roll,” but it’s a show that offers over a hundred episodes devoted to exactly what the title suggests.

Each one is devoted to a specific topic (from “The Complete Hit Singles History of Gary Lewis & The Playboys” or  “The Complete Hit Singles History of Peter Gordon”) to theme shows (like “Sex Rated Singles of the 1960s & 1970s” or “The 40 Greatest Bird-Named Groups”) and rarely heard songs (“The Top 40 Lost Hits of 1965.”)

I was surprised to see an old entry from last year dedicated to Canadian artists that have hit the charts on the U.S. There was nothing surprising in it for those who grew up here, but it was kind of interesting to see what they chose (and yes, even Gordon Sinclair's "The Americans" makes the list.) What I liked best about it, though, was that they don’t play the entire song, just enough to give you a sample of each one (although that’s more for licensing reasons than anything else.) All the shows are just under 90 minutes and there are no commercials, another bonus.

You can hear the Can Con show here.

Oh, and around the 50 minute mark, there's a mini-tribute to 1050 CHUM, which is kind of interesting.
