BBC Special On Monty Python/Rutles Genius Will Be Available Online

You may not know the name Neil Innes, but if you're a fan of Monty Python or the Rutles (the amazing takeoff on The Beatles), he's the guy who wrote all the music.

His work on the Rutles was especially incredible, tearing apart the Fab Four's classics and reassembling them in a hilarious way that still somehow became great tunes. (My favourite is "I Must Be In Love," which could easily have been a hit if they'd thought to release it.) But the list of his faux hits is long and incredible - Hold My Hand (instead of I Want to Hold Your Hand) or "Ouch," (a satire on "Help".) Or how about "Doubleback Alley" (a twisted version of Penny Lane?)

BBC Radio is doing a three part documentary on Innes, who was also a member of the Bonzo Dog Band. Among those taking part are Michael Palin, Terry Gilliam and Rick Wakeman. All the episodes will be available online for a month after they air and there's no geoblocking.

So if you were a fan of "All You Need Is Cash" (a legend that will last a lunchtime) check the BBC site later this week. And bring your own Cheese & Onions...

I hope they cover his roots on childrens TV in a comedy called "Do Not Adjust Your Set" which included some Pythons as well as sketch jumps that aped "Laugh-In". A true song writing genius who could produce both lyrics and melodies to match any genre. It will be a must listen. There is also the matter of a minor lawsuit over Spamalot credits/royalties.

I wish more people knew who this guy was. He wasn't as famous as the major Python performers but his songs were stunning in their originality and hilarity. The Rutles, as far as I'm concerned, is a masterpiece and a lot of it is because of his song parodies.

(Although the scene at the beginning where Eric Idle is reporting as a newscaster and the car with the camera on it takes off in the middle of it, forcing him to run after it as he continues doing his stand-up, never fails to make me laugh.)
