Legendary Canadian Engineer Passes At 81

You've probably never heard the name Don Hahn. But you've certainly heard his work. The Toronto-born studio engineer was avowed as something of a natural genius and was behind the board for The Band's acclaimed "Music From Big Pink" LP.

But it didn't stop there. As his obit notes, he also worked on tunes from the following superstars:

"Frank Sinatra, Count Basie, Quincy Jones, Peggy Lee, Harry Belafonte, Peter Paul & Mary, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Barbra Streisand, Ray Charles, Paul Simon, Judy Collins, Billy Joel, Paul Anka, Stephane Grappelli, Loretta Lynn, Willie Nelson, Whitney Houston, B.B. King, Woody Herman, Hugh Masekela, Dionne Warwick, Chet Atkins, The Brothers Johnson, Ricky Martin, Liza Minelli, George Benson, Paul Winter, Shirley Bassey, Dizzy Gillespie, David Sanborn, Bernadette Peters, Chick Corea, Barry Manilow and Dave Grusin."

And that's just a partial list.

That's some legacy. Hahn was also behind the music for many movies, TV shows (including three different Star Trek incarnations) and commercials, and his loss deserves to be noted here. He was 81.

An obit by Brad Wheeler that ran in yesterday's Globe 'n Mail is excellent further reading.    Wheeler dealt with some specific recording sessions incl. that of Music from the Big Pink which is particularly interesting.
