Latest Corus/Global culling - blame it on COVID

TORONTO -- In what it describes as a "significant" restructuring, Global News is cutting some of its workforce.

The Canadian news organization owned by Corus Entertainment Inc. confirmed it has laid off staff in an email to The Canadian Press, but declined to provide exact numbers.

Corus executive vice-president of broadcast networks Troy Reeb attributed the layoffs to challenges faced by the news industry in recent years, including regulatory restraints, a lack of government support, advertising losses and most recently, COVID-19.

Re: Latest Corus/Global culling - blame it on COVID

This is awful news, but not unexpected.

So far, I've seen this story on CTV's site as well as City TV's.

Nothing on the Global News site as of this posting. Sadly, there may be nobody left there to put it up!

(I was offered a position at Global's online news dept. a few years ago, but turned the position down. I'm certainly glad I did. But I feel sorry for those cut loose today.)

That is it.  Canadian news media - print/radio/television, online or otherwise - is nothing but DEAD.  Nothing but cheapskates who only care about the bottom line and nothing else.

Nice to see that Troy Reeb still has a job...

"Globalnews.ca will no longer support lifestyle, entertainment and social media teams..."

Sooooo...does this mean Entertainment tonight Canada is cancelled?

Final Jeopardy - (retort in form of a question) - Are distributors of information the cheapskates or are consumers who expect it to be provided free, the cheapskates?

K.K.

No word yet on how this impacts ET Canada...

Keep in mind that Barb Williams is no longer with Global/Corus, and ET Canada was always her pet project... so it was always protected from major restructuring efforts under Barb's watch...

Not that there have not been changes over the years... Kim D'eon, Rosey Edeh, and Rick Campanelli are all gone from the original host line-up...

So far, most of the staff impacted by yesterday's restructuring announcement have been on the digital news side... most, but not all...   Global under Shaw, and then under Corus always has a habit of using a broom with a wider sweep when they are "restructuring"...

The Troy Reeb memo seems to imply that ET Canada will not be substantially impacted....

“We are confident that Globalnews.ca audiences will continue to enjoy a great supply of lifestyle and entertainment content from our Corus colleagues at The Morning Show, ET Canada, and Slice.ca.”

Re: Latest Corus/Global culling - blame it on COVID

Normally when there's a huge mass firing, the station involved never mentions it on air - there's simply no way to make yourself look good, regardless of the reason.

But on Friday, just after 7:30 AM, GNR 640 morning show guest host (does this mean Oakley is finally on vacation?) Alan Carter actually talked about how "yesterday was a very tough day for us at Corus and Global," He then went on to outline the layoffs, paid tribute to the dearly departed and launched into a lament about how the current COVID economy is having a devastating overall effect on journalism.

I was surprised to hear him address it at all and good for him for having the courage to bring it up.

One other note about Carter, who I generally find entertaining. He noted a few days ago that in this virus lockdown era, he's never once worked from home, not even when he's doing his regular noon radio show. He talked about being 'locked' in a closet downstairs in the bowels of Global's HQ, where there's essentially a mic, a computer and not much else.

And he also outlined that if you ever have to leave that little room - say to visit the washroom - you have to put on a mask to go anywhere in the building. What a weird way to have to work, but it doesn't appear it will be changing anytime soon.

Reports from Unifor and the Canadian Association of Journalists indicate as many as 70 staffers were cut. That's a huge number.

You can read the memo sent to staffers here.

As often happens when there are major job losses, a game of musical chairs has started to fill in some big blank spaces. Broadcast Dialogue has a look at the list of those left and who's going where.
