It's an all 80's Long Weekend!

Okay, it is the first annual all 80's long weekend...back then we all had hair and plenty of it...for women, we had shoulder pads and big hair...but the music wasn't bad either...we had punk, rock, yacht rock (Christopher Cross), dance music, syntho-pop, new wave and jazz...

So, what were your top 5 (this time)...80's faves?

This is a time of Reaganomics, Presidential assassination attempts, Lennon got killed, Tylenol was tampered with, the New Coke was a "bomb", Lee Iacoca saved Chrysler, Trudeau lost, then won again, the Berlin Wall came down, the Blue Jays got into the playoffs, the Leafs became competitive, the "Skydome" opened, Roger, Rick and Marilyn hit the morning airwaves, CFNY was cool and MuchMusic almost killed the radio star...but not quite...

TV shows included Family Ties, Cheers, the ending of Mash, Miami Vice, Night Court,  Magnum P.I. Moonlighting, Cosby Show and Canada's own Night Heat, The Littlest Hobo and the Kids in the Hall too!

So, here are my top 5 faves from the 80's

1. Making plans for Nigel- XTC
2. Everybody wants to Rule the World-Tears for Fears
3. Working with Fire and Steel-China Crisis
4. The Way it is- Bruce Hornsby
5. She sells Sanctuary-The Cult...

Honourable mentions to Brian Ferry, Ian Dury, Flock of Seagulls, Asia (I know), Fine Young Cannibals, New Order, Violent Femmes , Erasure, Tom Tom Club, David Byrne, REM...the list continues
There are so many more...and I loved to Q107  (Scruff Connors took over from Ted Woloshyn) then by 1983 I became a big fan of CFNY, Pete and Geets, David Marsden and even Mike Stafford back then too!

So, it's your turn!

Go!

The world would be so good if it weren't for some people...

Too many great songs on everyone's list. I tried to narrow it down to five but could not get below nine:

All Her Favorite Fruit - Camper Van Beethoven
Going Down to Liverpool - the Bangles
All Over the World - ELO
Prime Time - Alan Parsons Project
The Swing of Things - A-Ha
Gathering Dust - Modern English
Just Like Heaven - the Cure
The Unguarded Moment - the Church
Sense of Purpose - the Sound

Not 100% but I think CHEZ was still Redmond Broadcasting owned.  When I was at CHNR in Simcoe in 1992, Jay Jackson was still operating both.

Re: It's an all 80's Long Weekend!

Spoiler alert, I am not a fan of the music of the 80's.    With respect to the choices of all above, this decade was really just not for me.    Having said that, here are my choices in no particular order for anyone who cares.

Eminence Front  The Who
Woman in Chains  Tears for Fears
Boys of Summer  Don Henley
Friends of Mr. Cairo  Jon and Vangelis
Slave To The Rhythm Grace Jones

Re: It's an all 80's Long Weekend!

Yes, I think you are correct. EZ Rock came after Redmond sold CJEZ  to Telemedia in the 90's.  At least the EZ was still in the call letters.  But since we are here how about a few more to get us through dinner...

I Want You Back- Sherry Keane
The Reflex- Duran Duran
White Lines- Grand Master Flash
What's Love Got to Do With It- Tina Turner
Electric Avenue- Eddy Grant
I'm Still Searching- Glass Tiger

The Pukka Orchestra - Listen to the Radio
Icicle Works - Whisper to a Scream
Duran Duran - New Moon on Monday
Midnight Starr - Operator
Connie - Experience

Re: It's an all 80's Long Weekend!

Sorry I forgot this one and have to add it--

Show Down at Big Sky  Robbie Robertson

As mentioned earlier, not a fan of the 80's so here are the big hits of the 80's that send me to punch the button on my car radio immediately:

Another One Bites the Dust  Queen
Purple Rain  Prince
We're Not Gonna Take It  Twisted Sister
Radio Ga Ga,  not sure who did it because I was never around long enough to hear the Jock back sell it.
Dude Looks Like a Lady Aerosmith

5 examples of why I am not a fan of 80's music.
I would trade one 70's for ten 80's.

Have a great weekend all.

Re: It's an all 80's Long Weekend!

Is it my imagination or is there a still frame at 0:33 of Prince's When doves cry that's being used to remove something from the original video?  My mind keeps telling me that something else should be there.

Reminiscent of when they took away the face removing from the few seconds of The Cars' "You Might Think" video.

My list:  (in no order)

Mike Oldfield & Maggie Reilly -- Moonlight Shadow
Yello -- Oh Yeah
OMD -- Forever Live and Die
Kristy MacColl -- Days
The Human League -- Love Action
The Stranglers -- Skin Deep

The last song on that list has a cute story behind it.  I heard it for the first time on CFNY as the extended mix 45 being spun by David Marsden.  Only thing, it was being spun at 33 -- but it sounded great until the vocals started at which point without saying a word the speed was changed and the song continued.  It sounded so good that I'm still not sure whether it was a mistake or intentional.  I still have a speed reduced donut of the opening and closing instrumental around here somewhere.

Re: It's an all 80's Long Weekend!

I grew up in the mid-late 80s as a metalhead teenager but still as a radio geek.   Small market northern ontario radio was all things to all people back then. so some of my favourite radio songs....  they still sound great today.

Everybody wants to rule the world - Tears for Fears
Pour some sugar on me - Def Leppard
Summer of '69 - Bryan Adams
Relax - Frankie Goes to Hollywood
These Boots - Kon Kan
Once Bitten, Twice Shy - Great White

Actually, I think they were still Easy 97 (or possibly Easy 97.3) around that time.

I thought it was a good contrast to the more upbeat "Miami Vice Theme". Has a nice, slightly haunting feel to it.

By the time it was released as a single, the show's popularity was starting to wane, which might partially explain why it didn't chart very high in North America, although it was a Top 40 hit in a number of European countries and it did get a fair bit of airplay in Canada (most likely due to the FM non-hit regulations that existed here at the time).

Re: It's an all 80's Long Weekend!

Thin Lizzy Angel of Death. Black Sabbath Heaven and Hell, Dio, Holy Diver. On the lighter side- Steve Winwood If You See a Chance. Huey Lewis and the News, A Couple Days Off .Billy Joel We Didn't Start the Fire. So many to choose from, though I tend to find more music to my liking in the 60 s and 70 s.Yes. I tend to lean to the heavy side. What ever happened to Oliver Heavyside?

Namely CHUM-FM.  That's where I heard it.  I did manage to score a 45-rpm disc of it.
