Should point out that the studio version of Smoke On The Water was released in 1972 and not 1969. The Deep Purple Mach one the line up that recorded Hush and Kentucky Woman was still active for most of 1969.

There's so many from the 70's but here is one more featuring the great Alex Chilton one time lead singer of the Box Tops and here with his 1970's group Big Star:

Re: Okay time to shake it up, It's all 70's weekend, what is your fave hit

Cash beat me to FM's Phasers On Stun so I will go with:

Argent "Hold Your Head Up"
Raspberries "Please Go All the Way"
Streetheart's version of "Under My Thumb"
Blue Oyster Cult "Godzilla"

anything and everything by Supertramp, Genesis, the Police, and the "I Robot" and "Tales of Mystery and Imagination" albums from The Alan Parsons Project

Long live 70's music, wouldn't it be great if Q107 did a depth cut long weekend of programming...

I will say the best version of Smoke on the Water was on Deep Purple's  88 live album "Nobody's Perfect" where the tempo was increased exponentially.  My college band used this pretty successfully.  Purple also re-recorded Hush as a studio add-on to that live album, but not quite as well as the original.

Another example of a generational difference would be Kiss 1974 "Cold Gin".  theKiss original was not without nuance, but the 88 version by Death Angel is sped up and enhanced the original..IMHO

Point is, decent hard rock was cemented in the 70s.  not trying to hijack this thread, but inject a bit of curiosity that my next generation experienced in the 80s..

Here's some trivia about two of the above tracks. Sail On Sailor was added hastily to the Holland album so hastily that they did not list the track on the back of the album cover. Instead the track that got cut was listed. The Holland album also came with a rather unusual add on. A 45 single of a rather strange fairytale about a magic transistor radio, Glad I held on to the original.

The major label debut of Satisfaction was released on coloured marble vinyl on Devo's first album which I technically still have since I know the person I lent it to many years ago and I am sure they will give it back to me. I have the first run of the album I would guess that they changed it to regular black vinyl later.

I don't know if they did a live version of the song in 1969, but the live recording that I'm familiar with was also done in 1972 as part of their Made In Japan album.

Much like Rush, Devo's first album kicked 9 kinds of arse. A true Classic. They were never able to muster that kind of energy again.

Smoke On the Water made it's first recorded appearance on the Machine Head album in 1972. There was no live version released before that. The Mark Two version of Deep Purple that recorded the song had been active for just over two years at the time. I guess before Machine Head, Sweet Child In Time was the signature song for second line up.

I guess Whip It does not count but The Girl U Want was kind of nifty.

Re: Okay time to shake it up, It's all 70's weekend, what is your fave hit

So I see it was mentioned that you couldn't have a 70's weekend without ABBA, and nobody has included the most successful group from Sweden, ssooo here we go-

SOS- Abba
Longer- Dan Fogelberg
Get Up Get Out and Move On- Fludd

I would say so far we have a pretty eclectic station...BOOM FM should be looking at our playlists!!

I would consider Dan Fogelburg's "Longer" to be early 1980, but I suppose it was heard in late 1979.
What else can we play?

Chilliwack - Fly At Night
The Jacksons - Blame it on the Boogie
Bee Gees - Tragedy

Yes Longer was a bit of a stretch, wiki had the song listed in 1979, but I think you are right it likely became a hit in 1980.  Dan Fogelberg was so good and a somewhat forgotten artist.

A Power Set Here to fire up the transmitter on a Saturday Night!  Get yer kazoo's ready!!

Rock and Roll Hootchie Coo- Rick Derringer
Bad Case of Lovin You- Robert Palmer
Africa- Thundermug

I have the Rick Derringer and Thundermug singles. I like the track Jump Jump Jump from Derringer's All American Boy album. That got a lot of airplay on FM. I enjoyed artists like Dan Fogelberg more before their top 40 success when they were progressive FM staples. You can include Poco, Ian Mathews and The Dwight Twilley Band in that group and quite a few more. In fact Robert Palmer's Sneaking Sally fits that bill.

Note:  Our version of Photograph had a skip in it near the end of the record so our listeners just thought that was the way it was produced!
