Need a Break From All of This Virus Hub Bub?

Many are growing weary of the constant and endless coverage of COVID-19.  Want to get away from all of the daily hullabaloo?  Well BOOM 97.3 just might have a little something for you!!

thanks paterson1, I'll be tuning in, Boom is a dance party on Friday afternoons, no pandemic coverage is a bonus.

Wonder if more stations will look for a balance.

And how is this all going to play out on the Victoria Day weekend. Rerolls will be a challenge to put together, old Covid19 content will sound absolutely awful.

Voiceover:"Please, drink responsibly, and keep your social distancing game going." "Friends don't let friends drink in large crowds." I jest but the same ole same ole radio programming content won't fly with listeners, and a fairly captive audience at that the first official long weekend leading into summer.

Sure. Okay. How far back do you want to take this?

The COVID-19-free idea is spreading like the virus. It's a lot easier to do the no-corona format when you're a music station. Much harder if all you do is talk.

Still, broadcasting giant WGN Chicago is pledging to do a virus-free Friday (outside of news updates) in which anyone who brings up the dread spread for the entire day is promptly reminded it's a no-go zone.

“If a caller, guest, or even you yourself accidentally brings it up, you get zapped [with a buzzer sound effect] like the opening scene of ‘Ghostbusters.’ . . . This is a great way for us to offer a break for all our listeners and potentially encourage new listeners. Since we are talk radio and rely on current events, this can be challenging, so do some off-the-wall topics.”

Normally, I'd agree with you. But depending on how things go (and we're less than a month away from the Victoria Day weekend, so I doubt things will change that much) the news-talk stations may stay live during the holiday. They stayed with original programming on Good Friday, which traditionally is one of the dullest days for rerolls in the whole year. If they did it then, they might just do it on what is traditionally "The First Long Weekend Of Summer."

A lot depends on the progress of the disease.

And you're right - what could they possibly rerun that wouldn't be horribly dated? There's been so much COVID coverage since March that it's practically become a new radio format.
