For the very first time, I heard CTN, the company that does the traffic reports for dozens of radio stations, including GNR640, advertise itself at the tail end of one of its own updates. It came in a tag just before the 8 PM news on the Toronto Corus AM outlet.
"We provide the helicopters, the reporters and the information for the traffic reports, featured on our national network of 105 radio stations and on Global Television News properties," its website reads.
I can't recall ever hearing them mention themselves on air before. I wonder if the virus lockdown - and its resultant lessening of traffic on our roads - prompted them to start advertising their own services.
What was interesting about the short tag was that it never really indicated that the report listeners were hearing was provided by the service. But it's the reason you often find SOWNY contributor Jody Thornton on so many different stations in the course of a day.
In case you're curious, here's their subscriber list. You'll notice that it covers almost every major station in the GTA.

It means they have unsold inventory - and if CTN has unsold inventory, that's an indication of how bad the advertising landscape is right now....CTN never has unsold inventory.

Actually, I thought of that. They may have self promoted only because they had no other advertiser to shill for. It's a sign of the precarious times we're in, and perhaps the fact that there hasn't really been much traffic to report on since this "everybody stay home" nightmare began a few weeks ago. Either way, a troubling indicator.
I wonder how CHMJ, the all traffic format station in Vancouver, is doing while this is going on. Or perhaps more correctly, isn't going on. Well, at least it's not all sports!

Haven't checked CHMJ, but sports radio ratings are almost non-existent right now. Like, zeroes. I know ratings are the least important thing in the world right now, but this will be a big problem for Bell and Rogers.
