CHFI Turns 60

It's rare that a broadcaster's FM station is older than its AM, but this week, CHFI marked a major milestone. Unlike CFRB, which reached 90 in 2017 and said nothing, the station marks the occasion with a spot, an on air celebration, a statement by the mayor and some vintage photos.

It's all about imaging. CFRB had the image of being the station old people listened to so they dropped the calls from their branding and they do not want to go back. CHFI, on the other hand, still wears their calls proudly because essentially they have and are delivering a product that's relevant to music listeners. From the beginning they played what the largest segment of their target demo was in to. In the 60's and early 70's it was Mantovani; today it's Taylor Swift. They haven't remained ranked at or near the top by accident.
