It is hard to believe that it was 39 years ago!

John Lennon got shot 39 years ago tonight...It really rocked the music world and I still remember candle light vigils and people from around the world paying homage to him. Plus, 2 of his songs were in the spirit of the holidays...,(Give Peace a Chance and So it is Christmas)... so he was getting airplay on many stations leading up too and especially after his death.

He had just released a new album and his hit song was an ode to his son Julian...

I remember studying for Christmas exams at Trent University the night it happened, one of my dorm buddies, was watching Monday Night Football, when Howard Cosell announced the tragic turn of events.

So this begs the question, where were you on this night and what memory comes to mind...

The world would be so good if it weren't for some people...

Re: It is hard to believe that it was 39 years ago!

I remember that night well. Except I really don't. I was working for one of the city’s top Top 40 stations but was home watching something else, when a family member let me know what had happened.

That was the end of my time in front of the tube. (Funny, today that would be my first destination.) And for some reason, I didn’t think to tune into the place I worked at. Instead, I switched on WCBS-AM, listening as the story developed. (This was in the pre-Internet days, so you had to listen over the air.)

I stayed tuned until around 3 AM, when I finally fell asleep. Big mistake. My news director called me at 5:30 in the morning, saying, “You heard what happened?” I groggily said yes. “Then get in here! We need everyone!”

And so, after just two hours sleep, I got up and went all the way downtown to the studio. I got in around 7 o’clock. When I next looked up from my board, it was 11 PM.  I don’t remember what happened between when I went in and when I came out, but it was a very long day and we turned out a ton of material.

The only other experience I ever had like that was in a TV newsroom on 9/11. I remember rushing into work that horrible September morning. I left just before midnight. I’m sorry to say we were so busy, I have almost no memory of that day, but I know we delivered the goods, which in the end was all that mattered.
